Coach Dick Lyon was perhaps the best football coach to coach in Wellsville. He had been quarterback at Colgate and wrote a Masters Degree Thesis on the split-T formation that was quoted in New York City newspapers. His theory was that with quickness and speed, the split-T could overcome a disadvantage in size. I first met him in the summer of 1953 at the swimming pool. He was there most days talking football with the high school boys. In the fall he had enough recruits to field 4 teams, Varsity, JV, and two cub teams who played each other. He scrounged old equipment to have enough, I remember old leather helmets kicking around the locker room. I played JV that year under coach Stan Ruger and being near sighted in the days before contacts wound up at guard. In 54 the practices started with military drill to get an entire team to move as one person. Coach Lyon would demonstrate any position, playing without helmet or pads, he could block and tackle with the best. He initiated best block and best tackle awards which would be a movie ticket or soda at Cretekos. He had all the games filmed and we had a meeting each week to review the film. After our left handed quarterback, Don Avery, lost his front teeth in a collision with a sideline bench, we all got boxer mouthpieces to wear. Coach Lyon left Wellsville after the sucessful 55 season to become head coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I rejoined him a year later and was invited to spaghetti dinners with him and his wife. Football was difficult at RPI for several reasons. I remember him saying that because of the long afternoon and evening lab sessions he had to reintroduce his team members to each other on Friday nights before the Saturday games. RPI was also a big hockey school, having won the NCAA championship two years previous. After several years, Coach Lyon left RPI to become an assistant coach at West Point. A few years later, I was shocked to hear that he had died of a massive heart attack at a very young age (about 40). I am sure that his memory lives on with all the young men that he coached. — Jim Bacon
At the end of the 1955 season, Coach Dick Lyon presented each of his players with a hand drawn “comic book” showing season highlights. This is that book.

In 1956, new coach Wally LaFountain took us back to single wing football overlooking our schedule of mostly larger schools. Every game but the last was played in rain and the record was perfect….no wins, all losses. Someone later told me that Coach LaFountain won one game in six years but that is just a rumor. Does anybody know? I do know that we all grew webs between our toes that year.
