Linda Louise Weinman-Perkins

Linda Louise Perkins, 72, wife of James R. Perkins, passed away on September 30, 2016, at Summit Square following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  Linda was born on April 10, 1944 in Buffalo, New York. She graduated from Wellsville High School in 1962 and from Genesee Community College with high honors in 1974. Jim and Linda were married on June 25, 1966. They have two children, Julie and Rebecca and four grandchildren, Logan, Madeline, Alexander and Emi.  Prior to her retirement in 2008, Linda worked as a realtor earning many honors for sales and service to her community. Prior to her real estate work she was employed by the University of Virginia Law School and the Frontier Culture Museum.  Linda was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother and active member of her community. She was a member of the Waynesboro Women’s Club, the Waynesboro Chorale Society and a volunteer at the Main Street Methodist Food Pantry. She will always be remembered for her caring heart, her beautiful smile, her positive attitude, and her wonderful voice. She loved her gardens and could be found each day making sure that each plant received the same exceptional care she gave to everything she did. Her family always came first as they were the most important thing in her life.  Linda was predeceased by her parents, Eleanor and Joseph Weinman. Surviving are her two sisters Pamela and Jerri and her two brothers Thomas and Charles; her husband of 50 years, their two daughters and their four grandchildren.   The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Summit Square in Waynesboro, Virginia for their wonderful care and friendship during Linda’s last year; to the many Home Instead care givers who helped her deal with the challenges of her disease; and to Linda’s many friends and neighbors for their support.  Arrangements are under the direction of McDow Funeral Home, where a memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 13 at 4pm, with a reception to follow. Marilyn T. Depew, 76, of Stow, NY, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2021, while at Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing.  She was born on December 9, 1944, in Wellsville, NY, the daughter of the late Ralph and Mona Cochran Tompkins.  Marilyn was a 1962 graduate of Wellsville High School and attended Bowling Green University. She married her high school sweetheart, John Depew, on September 21, 1963, in Wellsville, NY. She adored the job of being a homemaker to their family in Mount Vernon, Ohio, Pasadena, California, and then finally in Allegany, New York. Marilyn and John retired to their dream home on Chautauqua Lake in Stow.  Marilyn was a former member and active volunteer of the First Presbyterian Church, Olean where she sang in the choir, was on the Christian Education Committee and taught VBS and Sunday school. In addition, she held numerous volunteer positions in the local community serving on the school board, sports booster club and working later on with the Allegany Central School district as an aide.  Marilyn was an avid bowler, played tennis and bridge club with her friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family on the lake boating or shopping. Since retirement, she mostly loved spending the winter months with her husband, children, and grandson in Phoenix, Arizona.  Surviving besides her husband John Depew of Stow are two children Nicole (Derek) Stokes and Jeff Depew both of Avondale, AZ; her beloved grandson Bryant Gayton of Avondale, AZ and a brother James Tompkins of Addison, IL.  A celebration of life service will be announced by the family at a later date.  Memorials may be made to Celiac Disease Foundation, 20350 Ventura Blvd Ste 240, Woodland Hills, CA 91364.

Theodore James Scott “Ted” age 75, passed away unexpectedly early Saturday morning February 8, 2020, at his home in Sparta. He was born in Wellsville on August 15, 1944, a son of the late Raymond and Louise (Grantier) Scott. July 28, 1973, he was married to the former Kathleen “Kathy” Kimi Scott, who survives. Having taught in the Dansville School System for 34 years, Ted was an active member of the community. He was always willing to donate his time and expertise to those that asked, and sometimes even to those that didn’t. As reflected by some of the community organizations he was involved in, Ted was a lifelong outdoorsman. He could often be found outside in search of the dream buck or fish. He traveled all around the United States and Canada in pursuit of that dream. Recent travels included Labrador, Alaska, and Saskatchewan. Although the dream often remained elusive, the pursuit continued. When not looking for the perfect animal to mount on the wall, Ted was usually helping his family with whatever hobby that was currently consuming their life. Whether acting as a groom at horse shows or the go-to problem solver at dog competitions, he approached every task wholeheartedly. Actual experience performing that task was irrelevant to his willingness to perform it. Ted was a generous and kind man that gave much of himself to his family, friends, and community. He will be missed tremendously. Ted is survived by his wife Kathy, three sons, Joshua and his wife Leila Qian Yu Scott of Singapore, Timothy Scott of Boston and Ryan Scott of Sparta, a brother Gregory Scott of Whitesville. Laura E. Osborn, 78, of 477 Main St., passed away Monday (Feb. 22, 2021) at Jones Memorial Hospital, following a unexpected illness.  She was born July 19, 1942, in New Berlin, the daughter of the late John and Margaret Harschbarger Barnett. On June 23, 1989, in Indiana, she married Virgil Osborn, who predeceased her July 22, 2014.Laura was raised in Wellsville and was a graduate of Wellsville High School. She enjoyed all things crafting, as well as word search, dot-to-dot, coloring and brownies. She is survived by a brother, John “Jack” (Sharon) Barnett of Andover; a sister, Betty (Phil) Runkle of Olean; beloved nieces and nephew, Alissa (Pat) Barnett, Corinne Barnett, Bethany and John; and great-nieces and great-nephew, Brooke, Britney, Skylar and Darien.  A memorial service is being planned for a later date.  Please consider memorial donations to SPCA Serving Allegany County.

West Deptford, N.J. Cheryl Anderson (nee Bennett), age 73, of West Deptford, NJ, died unexpectedly on February 16, 2018 while surrounded by her family. Born and raised in Wellsville, NY, she graduated from Wellsville High School and from St. James Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Hornell, NY in 1965. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, NJ for 40 years, retiring in 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Ronald L. Anderson of West Deptford, NJ, her sister, Elaine Graves, her brother, Frederick Bennett Jr., and her parents, Linnie and Frederick Bennett Sr., all of Wellsville, NY. She is survived by her three children, Ronald Larry, Jr. of Raleigh, NC, Sheila (Rolf) Mikkelson of West Deptford, NJ, and Brian (Shannon) of West Deptford, sister Betty Herman of Lakeville, NY, and sister Joann Palmer of Las Vegas, NV. Cheryl dearly loved her four grandchildren, Justin Tyler, Nicklas Tomas, Hannah Jolie, and Emily Linnie. John Robert Dervey II

Mr. John Robert Dervay, 73, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017 at his home in Tega Cay.  John was born to the late John Robert and Dorothy Lutz Dervay on Aug. 10, 1944. He grew up as the eldest of four in Binghamton, N.Y. and later graduated from Wellsville High School. John re-located to upstate New York to pursue college at the University of Buffalo where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Chemical Engineering. John’s ambitious personality, intelligence and meticulous work ethic secured various chemical engineering executive positions with Air Preheater, Keene Corporation, Kaydon Corporation and Dollinger Corporation. John eventually moved to Tega Cay, S.C. in 1990 where he retired but continued to work by serving the city as a councilman for two terms. He loved his city and worked tirelessly to improve the economy and infrastructure.  John was a HUGE Carolina Tar Heels basketball fan, loved technology/space/aviation, reading, the Buffalo Bills, City Chicken, Spiedies, and Pierogies. His dry sense of humor, caring and generous disposition will be greatly missed by all those who loved him.  John is survived by his daughter, Shannon Dervay of Fort Mill. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Shawne F. Dervay; two brothers, Douglas and Dana Dervay; his sister, Shawne M. Dervay, many cousins, aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews.  A celebration of John’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018 at Wolfe Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service.

LaVerna Mae Dibble, 72, of Woodstock, Ga., passed away on Nov. 8, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. LaVerna was born in Wellsville, N.Y., to Leo and Susan Chambers on Dec. 7, 1943. She married Gary Dibble in 1979 and spent close to 37 amazing years with him before her passing. LaVerna spent her early days lovingly raising her children and when they were grown, began work as a special needs teacher’s aide at the Wellsville High School. Later in life she enjoyed working at Hallmark and Cracker Barrel of Conyers, Ga., where she made many close friends. LaVerna was involved in the Red Hat Society of Covington, Ga., and was a member of Heritage Hills Baptist Church of Conyers, Ga. She had a passion for family above all, but had a love for the beach, bird watching, collecting Hallmark Christmas ornaments, quilting and making her famous molasses cookies for the holidays. She will be remembered as a loving, energetic, creative, strong, spunky and beautiful woman.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Susan Cavanaugh and Leo Chambers; her sister, Retta Matteson; and her grandson, Justin Dibble. She is survived by her Husband, Gary Dibble; Sons, Vaughn (Christie) Cady, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Cady and Jeffrey (Connie) Dibble; Daughters, Heather Pape and Kelly Cady; Brother, Lewis Chambers; Sisters, Lois Duffy and Reva Swartout; and Grandchildren, Dalton Cady, Molly Cady, Dylan Pape and Adrian Pape.  Life Celebration Services will be held Sunday (Nov. 20, 2016) at 3 p.m. with an hour of family visitation at 2 p.m. Pastor Doug Ferguson of Heritage Hills Baptist Church will be officiating.

Eleanor Julia Thomas, beloved wife and mother, died Thursday, February 5, 2015. A longtime resident of Gwinn, Eleanor was a voracious reader, loved flowers, enjoyed backyard wildlife, and was devoted to her family, friends and pets. Eleanor was born May 6, 1994 in Belmont, New York to Ivan and Florence Pendleton. It was in Belmont that she met and married her husband and partner for life, Terrance Thomas. Together they embraced the Air Force lifestyle, living in Colorado, Minnesota, and finally Michigan. Eleanor carved out a career for herself as a Visual Merchandiser with the Army and Air Force Exchange Services. Her career allowed her to combine her love of art and design with retail and she often traveled to other military bases to assist with grand opening preparations. She spent 17 years working at AAFES before retiring to work at Family Dollar in Gwinn. In more recent years, Eleanor has been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a bingo volunteer, and an enthusiastic grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a loving and generous woman. She left us in the middle of living for us and caring for us. She will be missed every second of every day. Eleanor is survived by her husband, Terrance Thomas; children, Jim Thomas, Terri Thomas and Marla Miller; granddaughter, Katina (David) Stauffer; great-grandson, Gabriel Stauffer; siblings, Lillian Serra, Cecil Pendleton and Linda Fenlon; and nephews, Art and Butch Serra. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Barbara and Alberta Pendleton, and a brother, Robert Pendleton. Honoring Eleanor’s wishes, there will be no services at this time. Camden A. Meise Jr., 73, of Church St., passed away Tuesday (March 22, 2016) at his  home. Born in Wellsville, Feb. 18, 1943, the son of Camden A. and Doris Barlow Meise Sr., he was a Hornell area resident. Camden served his country in the United States Navy and worked as a supervisor at Eldre Manufacturing in Henrietta. He was predeceased by his sister, Sharon Ransear. He is survived by his children, Brenda Meise, Chad Meise, and Kelly Meise; grandchildren, Zachery, Bradley, Miles, Elijah Meise, and Chad Meise Jr.; nieces and nephews.

John Edward Fagan, 70, of Concord, passed away Thursday (March 19, 2015) at the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center. Born in Wellsville, N.Y., on Nov. 21, 1944, he was the son of the late Madeline T. Padden and Francis “Frank” Fagan. A veteran of the US Navy, Mr. Fagan worked as a machinist for IBM for 30 years and owned John Fagan Trucking Co. He was a member of St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Concord, N.C.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Fagan.  Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandra L. Eicher, whom he married on Dec. 30, 1965; daughter, Teresa Fagan Hartsell (Mark); brother, David Fagan; sisters, Helen Le Bere (Lorne), Frances Baham, Mary Fagan, Susie Fagan; grandchildren, Amanda E. Miljenovic (Jared), Coty R. Hartsell, Marcus G. Hartsell, Tucker F. Hartsell and numerous loved nieces and nephews.  Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday (March 27, 2015) at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 139 Manor Ave. SW, Concord, North Carolina 28025. Yvonne Andrews Merritt, 64, of 6625 Phillips Hill Road, died Wednesday (July 16, 2008) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born on June 14, 1944, in Wellsville, the daughter of John and Loula (Burrows) Andrews. On May 12, 1963, in Jacksonville, Fla., she married Gerald Merritt, who survives.  Yvonne was a 1962 graduate of Wellsville High School. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Arnoys & Dye in Wellsville for many years. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wellsville. Surviving in addition to her husband of 45 years is her brother, Donald B. (Cheryl) Andrews of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a nephew, Andy Andrews of Bolivar; and a sister-in-law, Genelda (Wayne) Gray of Gainesville, Fla. She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by a beloved aunt, Carrie Burrows. Friends are invited to call from 7-8 p.m. Monday at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc., 34 W. State St. in Wellsville. The funeral will follow visitation at 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with Rev. Marian Schneider presiding. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Ernest G. “Mike” Burdick, III, 63, passed away Saturday (July 11, 2009)at VA of WNY Healthcare Systems in Buffalo.Mr. Burdick was born Oct. 18, 1945, in Wellsville, to Ernest G. and Regina M. (Barton) Burdick Jr. He was a 1962 graduate of Wellsville Central School. Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1962 and served two years and re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served an additional 18 years, retiring from the service in 1986. Mike is survived by his mother, Regina M. Barton of Trenton, Fla.; a son, Michael Shawn Burdick of Martinsville, Ind.; two daughters, Maureen Burdick of Butler, N.J. and Marisa (David) Sessions of Trenton, Fla. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a son, Richard Burdick, who died in combat in Iraq, and a brother, also Richard Burdick. Mike served his country proudly and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. There will be no prior visitation. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in Hillside Cemetery in Andover, with full military honors. Bernice Donna Gaus-Wereley 67, of 6878 Co. Rd. 20, passed away on Friday (Dec. 9, 2011) at her home. Born Aug. 6, 1944, in the Town of Allen, she was the daughter of Norman and Donna Gaus. On Dec. 10, 1988, she married Gordon “Bud” Wereley, who survives. Bernie grew up in the Short Tract, Fillmore and Wellsville areas. She was a graduate of Wellsville Central School, Class of 1962. She raised her family in Friendship and was employed as a bookkeeper for several years at Perkins Sales and Service in Belmont and later at Blumenthal’s Motor Cycle Shop in Olean. She enjoyed watching NASCAR and football. Her greatest love was spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. Bernice was a past member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Wellsville and past member of the Friendship Fireman’s Auxiliary. Surviving, in addition to her husband, Bud, are a son, Patrick (Susan) Herrick of Cuba; a stepson, David (Lisa) Wereley of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Terri (Matthew) Sanford of Hornell, and Kammi (Joel) Sanford of Bath; two stepdaughters, Becky (Bob) Webster of Scio, and Beth (Timothy) Burdick of Richburg; grandchildren, Aaron, Joshua, Alexis and Troy Sanford; Cory and Kelly Jo Sanford; Justice and Cole Herrick; Bobby Webster; Molly Young; Kristen Gray and Heather Burdick; a brother, Dennis Gaus of Buffalo; a nephew, Randy Gaus of Wellsville; and a mother-in-law, Jessie Wereley of Friendship. She was predeceased by her brother, Bernard (Sandi) Gaus. Senior Master Sgt. Clyde C. “Buck-O” Gowdy, U.S. Air Force retired, flew his last mission on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007. Clyde was born on May 7, 1943, in Wellsville, N.Y. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 26½ years. Clyde spent 12 of those years as an IO with his comrades at the 16th SOS, Hurlburt Field, Fla. After retiring from the Air Force he earned his Masters of Science in management from Troy State University in 1993. Clyde joined the family of the Enlisted Widows Foundation in 2003 at Teresa Village and then moved to Bob Hope Village in 2005. He began serving in his current position as Deputy Director in 2006. Clyde was a Master Mason, a lifetime member of the Spectre Association, a member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association, the American Legion, the Elks and the Playground Amateur Radio Club. He is survived by his wife of 42¾ years, Jeri; his daughter, Deetra Miller and husband Robert; and son, Clyde C. Gowdy II and wife Patricia; grandchildren, Trey Gowdy, Rob, KaDee and Cooper Miller; his older sisters, Virginia Schon and Roberta Sprague; and his nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, with a memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road N.E. Wellsville, NY – Fred D. McGee, 67, of 20 Chamberlain Street died Wednesday, November 03, 2010 at his home following a long battle with cancer. He was born August 30, 1943 in Bradford, PA, the son of Fred and Kay (Knappenberger) McGee. He was raised in Andover under the care of Charlotte and Asa Gleason.    Fred was a graduate of Wellsville High School and had attended Brockport State College. He was employed in the Quality Assurance Department of Dresser-Rand Corporation in Wellsville, retiring in 1999. He was a member and Past Commander of the Sons of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion in Wellsville; he was also a member of the Wellsville Moose Lodge # 601 and the Frank B. Church Post # 2530 VFW in Wellsville. He is survived by three children, Michelle McGee of Burgaw, NC, Marc (Kim) McGee of Canandaigua and Penny (Juan) McGee DeJesus of Farmington, NY, a granddaughter, Sierra McGee and his fiancée, Kim Baldwin of Wellsville.    Friends are invited to a celebration of Fred’s life, on Saturday, November, 6, 2010 at 1:00 pm in the American Legion Post 702, 23 Jefferson Street in Wellsville; there will be on prior visitation. Karen A. Burke, 61, of 2818 Williams Grove Road, died unexpectedly on Friday March 17, 2006. She was born September 26, 1944 in Lackawanna, NY the daughter of Kenneth and Clara (Braun) Smith. She was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception School, Wellsville High School class of 1962 and the Olean Business Institute. She was a former waitress at the Fassett Hotel in Wellsville, was the Wellsville Village Clerk from 1966 to 1979 and was the Business Manager and Clerk of the Board of Education for Andover Central School from 1979 to her retirement in 2005. She was a member of the Woman of the Moose and an avid shopper. A devoted mother, grandmother and sister, Karen is survived by 1 son, Todd J. Burke and his partner David S. Monks both of Los Angeles, CA, 2 daughters, Molly J. (Lance) Carlin on Andover and Jennifer J. Burke of Dunkirk, 2 granddaughters, Jaycie and Kori Carlin, 1 sister, Susan S. Henry of Wellsville, 2 nieces, Kelly (Scott) Brien of Wellsville and Robin (James) Blake of Titusville, FL, several aunts, uncles, cousins and will be missed by her many friends. She was predeceased by 1 sister, Nancy L. McDowell in 2003. Friends are invited to share in the celebration of her life on Saturday March 25th beginning at 2:00 pm at Andover Rod & Gun Club on Kilbane Road in Andover, NY. John F. ”Whiff” Sobek

November 7, 1943 ~ May 4, 2004

John F. ”Whiff” Sobek, of 4192B Bolivar Road, passed away on Tuesday May 4, 2004. He was born on November 7, 1943 in Wellsville to Steven and Christine DeVore Sobek. He was a life long resident of Wellsville where he graduated from High School. Whiff worked for many years at Dresser Rand in Wellsville and ran the Purple Penguin Sports Card Shop. He was a member of the Brookside Wesleyan Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge. Whiff’s hobbies included cooking, horse shoes, bowling, billiards and card games. His true love was sports. He enjoyed youth, high school, college and pro sports. Whiff volunteered his time for many years as the official score keeper for many youth, high school and community teams. Because of dedicated friends, the season nor weather mattered he was always at the game. His knowledge of sports was vast, but his favorite was the games of the Wellsville PONY League teams at Tullar Field. Survivors include a brother James [Carol] Sobek of Indianapolis, Indiana; aunts, uncles and cousins; Besides his parents he predeceased by his brother Joel Sobek. Friends may call on Thursday May 6, 2004 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in the J.W. Embser & Sons Funeral in Wellsville where a Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 11 am with Rev. Robin George presiding. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery and memorials may be made to the Wellsville Little League or any Wellsville youth sports program.
