 Christian Braunschweiger

October 18, 1926 ~ March 20, 2018

Christian C. Braunschweiger, PhD, age 91, died peacefully on March 20, 2018, from complications of a stroke suffered in January.  Through it all, he never lost his notorious wit and sense of humor! Chris was born on 10/18/1926 in Wellsville, NY where he was a very proud member of the Class of 1944 and their “Undefeated and Untied” football team his senior year! After serving in the US Navy for two years, he graduated from Alfred University in 1950.  He went on to earn his PhD in Mathematics from the University of WI–Madison. There, he met and married the love of his life, H Patricia Kearns, who, after 60 years of marriage, predeceased him in 2013. While adding five children along the way, his academic career took them to Purdue University, University of DE, and ultimately, back to Wisconsin and a full professorship at Marquette University where “Dr. B” taught for over 27 years. He retired in 1993 and was named Professor Emeritus in 1994.  Chris and Pat were fortunate to have traveled extensively in the US and abroad. When health issues necessitated their move to The Highlands at Pittsford in 2009, they never lost contact with family and friends from every place they had ever called home; including cousins and friends in Germany where Chris and Pat had lived during two academic sabbaticals taken in 1964 and 1981.  He is survived by “his gang”, Michael (Lori Tanner) of Seneca, SC, Susan (Mark) Hickman of Bend, OR, Kathleen (Jorn Piel) of Carlton, GA, Steven (Mary Jo) of Penfield, NY and Mary Pat (Thomas) Hall of Loudon, TN; grandchildren, Charles, Justin (deceased) and Robert Braunschweiger, Stephen Hickman, Lauren (Christopher) Jenkins, Ashley (Robert) Pierce, Karen (Paul) Rufo, Kelly (Tracy) Meade and Molly Hall; great grandsons, Jackson Jenkins, Wyatt Pierce and William Braunschweiger. Chris is also survived by his sister, Alice (Robert) McEnroe of Wellsville, NY, sister-in-law, Kathleen (Jacob) Martens of Wausau, WI and many nieces, nephews and friends.  Dad would have wanted to say goodbye to his friends at the Highlands at Pittsford and to thank the staff at Aaron Manor in Fairport, NY for the compassion and care they gave him and his family during the last two months of his life. There will be no prior calling hours. Friends are invited to join the family for a graveside service to be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville, NY on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, we suggest donations to the , or Marquette University.
