Elizabeth M. “Bette” Burger, 98, of Wellsville, NY, died Monday, September 21, 2020 in Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville. Born October 19, 1921, in Wellsville, she was the daughter of Isaac and Margaret “Maggie” Gourlay Glendenning. On April 15, 1943, in Wellsville, she married John R. “Jack” Burger, who predeceased her on November 23, 1994. A 1939 graduate of Wellsville High School, she was employed by Worthington during World War II. Bette was a long-time member of the Christian Temple, now Grace United Church, Wellsville. She resided on Breckenridge Avenue for over 60 years. She was very interested and knowledgeable throughout her life in the many current topics of the day, while still finding time to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries with an appropriate card for family members and friends. Her family is grateful to her wonderful neighbors, caregivers, and service providers who have been so helpful and kind to her in her twilight years. Surviving are: a son, David B. (Dierdre) Burger of Lakewood Ranch, FL, formerly of Boston, MA; three grandchildren, Eric (Katherine) Burger of Longmont, CO, Joshua (Elizabeth) Burger of Amherst, MA, and Sarah (David) Canter of Cave Creek, AZ; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces, Bonnie Hastings of Camillus, NY, Brenda (Len) Brown of Fort Myers Beach, FL, Sandra Kenyon of Genesee, PA, and Sharon (Richard) Brooks of Daytona Beach, FL; and nephews, Robert (Lori) Burger of Haw River, NC and Dale (Claudia) Burger of Daytona Beach, FL. In addition to her loving husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Swarthout and Helen Malcolm. A Memorial Service is tentatively planned for October 2021 to coincide with Bette’s 100th birthday. Arrangements will be announced by Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home, Wellsville, NY. Cremation was at Olney-Foust Crematory. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville. Memorials may be made to David A. Jeanne M. (Peaslee) Phillips, 96, of Lewisburg, entered her eternal home in Heaven on Jan. 9, 2017, with her family by her side. She was born March 19, 1920, a daughter of the late Leon and Jeanne (Lane) Peaslee. Jeanne was a strong loving woman of deep faith, who’s love she shared with her husband Carl of 77 years. Jeanne will forever be known for her love of her family and friends. Jeanne is survived by her husband, Carl A. Phillips; three children, Janet (Jim) Henry, of Vermont, Myrton (Linda) Phillips, of Florida, and Jack (Nancy) Phillips, of New York; 15 grandchildren; 39 great-grand children; and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Carla Shreck; and five siblings. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jeanne’s life at 11 a.m., Jan. 28, at the Watsontown Alliance Church, 1165 Eighth Street Drive, Watsontown, followed by a luncheon at the church. Robert L. Harder, 93, of the Stone Dam Road, Town of Alma, N.Y., passed away in his home on Sunday (March 20, 2016) following a long illness. He was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Kibbeville, Pa., the son of Lee and Ethel Jones Harder. On Oct. 26, 1946, in Wellsville, he married Laura A. Hunt, who survives him. He operated his own farm and also was a machinist at the Dresser-Rand Corp. in Wellsville until his retirement. As an avid outdoorsman, he also enjoyed time spent with his family. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Laura A. Hunt Harder; a son, Willis Harder of Wellsville; daughters, Sharon (Stephen) Ritter of Friendship, N.Y., and Dawn Ordway of Wellsville; grandchildren, Robert J. (Karen) Harder of Cuba, N.Y., Janis (Steven) Hofbauer of Buffalo, N.Y., Steven Ritter of Niagara Falls, N.Y., Jeffrey Ritter of Olean, N.Y., Dennis Ordway of Wellsville, and Darla (Kevin) Petrinic of Alden, N.Y.; also many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters and a brother, Dorothy (Thomas) Coyle, Marian (Kenneth) Knox, Winifred (Demerle) Knox, Olive (Harvey) Booth, Florence (William) Carpenter, Sydney (William) Rogers and Maurice (Lytie) Harder. Honoring his request, there will be no visitation or funeral services. Burial will be in the Yorks Corners Cemetery in the Town of Willing.

Walter J. Seth, 99, husband of the late Dorothy M. (Eichberg) Seth, peacefully passed away at the Sitrin Health Care Center (Chestnut House) in New Hartford, NY, on Friday, December 14, 2018, with his family at his side. Born in Erie, PA, on June 5, 1919, he was the son of Charles and Margaret (Malloy) Seth. After serving in the armed forces during World War II, he married Dorothy Eichberg, with whom he shared 68 wonderful years of marriage. He also earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Buffalo in NY. In 1961, Walter and Dorothy moved, with their three children, from the Buffalo, NY, area to New Hartford, NY. Walter spent the majority of his professional career in the insurance industry working for a number of companies including Utica National Insurance and Alexander & Alexander. He was an avid walker, golfer and enjoyed the outdoors. He was a voracious reader and he also shared the joy of antiquing with his wife. He especially loved all of his dachshunds. Most of all, Walter loved his family, to whom he was devoted. He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Dorothy, in 2015, and is survived by their three children: a son, Michael and his wife, Soo-ok, of Virginia, his devoted daughter, Sharon Seth, of New Hartford, and a son, Kevin, and his wife, Faye, of Massachusetts; a grandson, William Seth, of New Hartford and his girlfriend, Adriane Hectus; a great-grandson, Dimitri Seth; and a great-granddaughter, Mara Seth. Walter was preceded in death by his two brothers, Paul Seth and Carroll Seth, both of New York; and two sisters, Rita Mae Lane and Genevieve Eberle. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service was attended by his immediate family on Wednesday, December 19 at Green Lawn Cemetery in New Hartford.

Evelyn Stevens Gorman of Village of Oak Creek, AZ joined her beloved husband Warren in the arms of Our Lord on December 22, 2018 in Cottonwood, AZ. Evelyn was born in Olean, NY to Edward C. and Grace A. Stevens and graduated from Alfred University, Magna Cum Laude, in 1943. She married Warren Gorman at the St. Bonaventure University chapel in 1949. She pursued her career as a librarian and earned her Master of Library Science degree from Syracuse University in 1967. She assumed her final position in 1971 as Director of the Health Sciences Library at St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix, AZ and retired from there in 1987. She and Warren then moved to the Village of Oak Creek in 2007. She is survived by son David E. Gorman, daughter-in-law Charlotte Bell Gorman and granddaughter Stephanie Y. Gorman, many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her parents, and siblings Paul W. Stevens, Cecil C. Stevens, Richard H. Stevens, Margaret M. Stevens Rosen, and Mildred B. Stevens. Arrangements made by Westcott Funeral Home, Cottonwood. Memorial service at St. Francis Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th St. Phoenix, Saturday, December 29 at 1:00 PM. The Lord’s good and faithful servant, Myron A. Miller, 92, passed on into glory on Feb. 16, 2015. Myron was a World War II?veteran and a longtime business owner. Myron was born to the late William and Louise Miller in Hornell, N.Y., on Jan. 2, 1923. Myron graduated from Wellsville Central School in 1939. Enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943, he was stationed in North Ireland. In 1943, he installed the “Air Ministry Laboratory Bomb Teacher Mark IV”?(AML)?at over 5 Stations. During that time, he and 2 other officers developed the Automatic and PDI?Operation of AML Bombing Trainers for the AML, which increased the accuracy of the site bombing. He was commended by Brigadier Generals, receiving a medal and numerous letters. After VE?Day, he served in the Swabia and Bayern regions of Germany. In November of 1944 he began his journey home and was discharged on Dec. 19, 1944. On Sept. 8, 1946, he wed Onalee Mae Fisher in Wellsville, NY. Together, they built a life in the Wellsville area. Myron worked at Sinclair Refinery until 1946, when he began to his auto repair business. Recreational vehicles were added in the 1960’s. Shortly after this, their business grew, becoming Millers Garage and Trailers Sales and eventually the business became known as Millers Sales and Service. Myron and Onalee retired from the business in 1993. Myron is survived by his wife, Onalee Mae Fisher of 68 years; his sons, Roger (Karen)?Miller of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rodney (Sherie)?Miller of Creston, Ohio and daughter, Roxanne (Thomas)?Fisk of Lockport, New York. Grandchildren include Andrew (Nancy)?Fisk, Benjamin (Karen)?Fisk, Peter (Katie)?Fisk, Betsy (Todd)?Russell, and David (Laura)?Miller; Great-Grandchildren, Joshua and Matthew Miller, William, Rachel, Claudia, Charlotte, Ryan and Jillian Fisk and Zachary and Caleb Russell; Sisters, Elizabeth Burdick and Velma Guild. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home, Inc., in Wellsville, NY, on Friday (Feb. 20, 2015) from 1-2 p.m. There will be a service immediately following visitation. The Reverend Edward Bean will be officiating the service. Myron will be laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Myron.

Elizabeth Davie Burner Dickerson, 96, of Spring Hill, died peacefully on Saturday (Dec. 9, 2017). She was born June 6, 1921 to Paul and Beatrice (Smith ) Davie in Wellsville, NY where she lived into her seventies until she retired in Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Alvin Burner, her second husband Chester Dickerson, her sisters, Ruth (George) Smith, Eleanor (William) Yerrick, and a step daughter Christine Dickerson (Paul Turner). She is survived by her daughter, Constance (Ronald) Henry, three granddaughters, Laura (Elbert) Nieves, Rebecca Henry and Kristin Henry, and a great granddaughter Lily Nieves. She is also survived by three step children, Brian (Ninetta) Dickerson, Barbara Petraznik (Gary Edwards), and David (Patrice) Dickerson, and several step grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a long time businesswoman in Wellsville, owning Davie’s Department Store. Davies was founded by her grandfather, Charles Eugene Davie and was originally located in Bolivar. Later it moved to Wellsville, where it was owned by her father, Paul Davie, and later by Elizabeth. As a women and children’s clothing merchant, she was active in the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Holly Twig and Professional Business Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Disciples of Christ Church. She enjoyed bridge and oil painting but especially enjoyed china painting. In her later life she took up counted cross stitch, producing over two dozen masterpieces.She enjoyed traveling, visiting five continents and many states in her lifetime. A memorial service will be held in Spring Hill in January and later in Wellsville.

Gladys Marion Hornburg, 96, of 2938 Truax Road, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017 while visiting her son in Kentucky. She was born on March 25, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Lottie (Freeman) Flint. On April 9, 1940 in Wellsville she married Glenn E. Hornburg who predeceased her on November 8, 2011. Gladys moved from Scio to Wellsville in 1938 and graduated from Wellsville High School. She was first employed at Worthington Corporation in Wellsville from 1940 to 1951, J. J. Newberry’s from 1951 to 1954, and later for the Brown and Stout Insurance Agency from 1961, to her retirement in 1982. She was affiliated with the Brookside Wesleyan Church in Wellsville. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading, and loved (and was very good at) Rummikub and watching the Yankees. She was also very proud of the fact that after retirement, she and her husband worked together making wooden crafts in their shop. She is survived by a son, Gary (Debbie) Hornburg of Ashland, KY, a daughter, Janice (George) Givens of Andover, three grandchildren, Maribeth (Shannon) Hausey, Ashland, KY, Dennis Givens and Christi Brewster both of Andover, three great grandchildren, Danielle Armfield, Michelle Schweigart and Marc Givens, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband by her step-mother, Gertrude Graham Flint, two sisters, Dorothea Griffiths, and Irene (Ken) Washburn and one brother, Charles W. Flint. Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm and on Thursday, June 22nd from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will follow visitation on Thursday at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Rev. Daniel Milroy of the Victory Baptist Church in Albion presiding. A memorial service for Elizabeth “Betty” Burdick, 95, who passed away March 21, 2017, will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday (May 7, 2017). Betty is survived by two daughters, Carol D. (James) Dombeck of Webster, NY and Dr. Brenda J.(Grant H.Waldref) Burdick of Guffey, CO.; one son, John F. Burdick of Manvel, TX.; one sister, Velma Wesche-Guild of Wellsville, NY; one daughter-in-law, Denise L. Burdick of Friendswood, TX.; and one sister-in-law, Onalee Miller of Clarence, NY. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Pamela (Chris) Devries, Aaron (Rossana) Dombeck, Alex Burdick, Bethany Burdick, Jaymes Burdick, Crystalyn Burdick, Benjamin Burdick and Blake Burdick, two “adopted granddaughters,” Meghan Snyder and Theresa Stearns, six great grandchildren, Jacob Devries, Nicholas Devries, Zachary Devries, Alanah Stearns, Lauryn Dombeck and Sarah Dombeck and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband of 57 years, she was predeceased by one brother, Myron A. Miller. Betty enjoyed many passions. As a Christian, she loved to read The Bible, share her faith and walk with the Lord. She was very active in the Hornell-Wellsville Christian Women’s Club and was elected the first Chairperson of the Hornell-Wellsville Christian Business and Professional Women’s Council in 1972.Until her recent relocation to Colorado she attended Alfred-Almond Bible Church for many years. Betty had a lifelong love for music, and played the harmonica, chromonica and cello. She was cellist for many local groups including The Wellsville Musical Club and The Wellsville Civic Symphony Orchestra. Betty was thrilled to attend Colorado Springs Philharmonic 90th Season Gala Concert with cellist Yo Yo Ma just a few weeks ago. Betty loved to correspond and encourage others by enclosing interesting newspaper articles in her thoughtful and sweet letters. She combined her love of nature, wildlife and exercise by enjoying daily walks. She enjoyed scenic drives and traveling with her family, taking vacations throughout much of the United States and Canada. Her family has many fond memories of these trips. Additionally, Betty was an active member of the Catherine Schuyler Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and was instrumental in her daughters and two granddaughters also joining. DAR dovetailed nicely with Betty’s passion for reading history and other non-fiction books. Per Betty’s wishes, there will be no prior visitation. A memorial service will be held at The Alfred Church Center on Sunday May 7, 2017 at 2 pm. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville, NY.

Priscilla (Rosenkrans) Lewis, of Mystic, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 3, 2016. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Aug. 8, 1921, to Paul Rosenkrans and Frances H. (Barkley) Rosenkrans. She grew up in Canton, Ohio, with her mother and aunt’s family. She then relocated with her mother to Wellsville, N.Y. in the 30’s. She was an honor student at Wellsville High School, graduating class poet and 2nd in her class in 1939. It was this time when she met the love of her life, Lester B. Lewis. They were married in Buffalo, N.Y.,, on June 10, 1943. Her husband was in the Navy, having joined in 1940. He returned to the Pacific Arena after they honeymooned in Boston, New York and Hornell. They moved to Mystic in 1952 with their two daughters, Susan Gail and Cynthia Jan. Priscilla was active in the community. She led a Brownie/Girl Scout Troop, contributing to many bake sales to raise money for the Broadway School and Stonington High School band boosters. She worked in the Stonington school system for eons. She was secretary to the principal at the Broadway School, Mystic Junior High, Stonington Education Department and then on to UConn Avery Point branch, Secretary to the Dean. After retiring from her secretarial career she worked at the Mystic Seaport for 40 years as an interpreter of exhibits. She was always cheerful and helpful to the visitors and remembered by museum staff as extremely knowledgeable and caring. She was predeceased by Lester B. Lewis in 1987, and her mother in 1990. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Gail Lewis and CJ Lewis; granddaughters, Stacey Dean and Kate Dean French; and three grandchildren, Steven Dean, Cheyenne Holliday and Cody Holliday. She was an avid reader. She shared her love of books and reading by delivering books to shut-ins on behalf of the Mystic Noank Library. A bench was donated to the library in 2001 with a plaque on it asking viewers to “Rest and be thankful” to honor Priscilla R. Lewis. It was a phrase she and her husband brought back with them from an area in Scotland, where they had lived for 5 years. Private burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to any charity her friends deemed worthy.

Robert C. Baker, 95, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (March 16, 2016) at Clifton Springs Hospital. Friends may call at the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St., Geneva, on Saturday (March 19) from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm in the funeral home. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Bob was born on May 5, 1920. He was the son of the late Alison and Olive Dickens Baker. He graduated from Wellsville High School. Bob married the love of his life, Florence G. “Teddy” Baker, on November 12, 1949. They settled in Canisteo, N.Y., and began raising their family. In 1956 they moved to Waterloo, N.Y. Bob drove truck for Esso, later known as Exxon, for over 25 years, retiring in 1976. He then worked for several years for Baker’s Exterminating with his son Jeff. He was a very talented musician playing the piano, organ, and guitar. He entertained at many locations including the piano bar, York Inn, and other venues. Bob was devoted to his family. He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his children Gary (Gayle) Baker of Geneva and Jeffrey Baker of Dundee; grandchildren Lisa (Len Clay) Simolo, Craig (Kara Bucklin) Baker, Courtney (Matthew) Horn, Chad (Jenise) Baker, Brett Baker, and Mark Baker; great-grandchildren Preston, Kierstyn, and Chad Baker, Richard Bruno, Thomas and Joseph Horn, Bryan Iannopollo, Brianna and Bella Baker; his sister Lasca Congelli; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his wife, Florence “Teddy” Baker, in 2001 and his daughter, Cynthia Turo, in 2005.

Sarah R.”Sally” McNulty of Manor Hills adult Care Facility on Bolivar Road passed away on Monday July 6, 2009 at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was a former resident of Farnum Street who was born in Buffalo on May 12, 1922 to Peter and Agnes Lawton Cole. On May 18, 1940 in Wellsville she married Richard P. McNulty who predeceased her on December 13, 1998. Sarah graduated from Wellsville High School in 1939. During WWII, while her husband was serving in the war, she was employed as a riveter” Rosie the Riveter” for Bel Aircraft in Buffalo and later became a cook for the Airlanes Restaurant. She and her family moved back to Wellsville in 1955 and she worked for Jones Memorial Hospital from where she retired. Sarah’s hobbies included sewing, afghan making and crocheting. She made clothes for her children and will be remembered for her doll making. Sarah loved to cook and bake for her family and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Wellsville. Survivors include: a daughter Jean [Sean] Franklin of Plainfield, IN.; three sons, Richard”Mick” [Carolyn] McNulty of Ocean Springs, MS., and Daniel [Jean] McNulty of Aiken, SC. And Timothy [Cindy] McNulty of Wellsville; thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; and a spiritual care giver, Maureen Schmidt. She was also predeceased by a daughter Sister Nancy McNulty RSM and fourteen brothers and sisters. Friends are invited to call on Friday, July 10, 2009, from 10 am to 12 noon at the J.W.Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A funeral service with Monsignor Vincent Becker will follow the calling hours at 12 noon in the Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery and memorials may be made to either the Jones Memorial Hospital Building Fund or to the Manor Hills Activities Center.

Celia E. Duke, 88, of 244 N. Main Street died on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center following a long illness. She was born July 19, 1921 in Belmont the daughter of Louis and Jennie (Presutti) Jordan. On May 2, 1944 in St. Louis, MO she married Douglas E. Duke who predeceased her on December 8, 2008.Celia was first employed as a legal secretary for Attorney Norman Fitzer in Wellsville and during WW II she was employed at Worthington Corporation in Wellsville. In 1962 she returned to Worthington Corporation as an executive secretary until her retirement. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and a former member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She had a true love of nature and wildlife; especially wild birds. She supported her boys and their friends in their many birding adventures. She enjoyed playing Bridge, reading and was an avid Boston Redsox and Cleveland Browns fan. She also had a wonderful memory for sport trivia.She is survived by two sons, Oak (Susan) Duke IV and Alan Duke both of Wellsville, four grandchildren, Oak Duke V, Ethan Duke, Alana Duke, Cameron Duke, a great granddaughter, Ava Grace Duke and two step granddaughters, Sarah Harris and Kathryn Moxley as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend Valerie Vreeland of Wellsville. She was predeceased by her father who was born in Forino, Italy and whose name was Luigi Giordano before coming to America; her mother who was born in Bugnara, Italy and whose name was Jemma Giovannina before coming to America; five brothers, Joseph, Louis, Max, John and James Jordan and three sisters, Josephine Serio and Amelia and Marian Jordan.Friends are invited to a graveside service on Saturday, January 2, 2009 at 1:00 pm in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville with Pastor Dick Helms presiding. Francis L. Sawyer, 91, of 1984 Dutch Hill Road died on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center with his family at his side. He was born December 24, 1919 in the Town of Willing the son of Lee and Myrtle (Keagle) Sawyer. On June 27, 1942 in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, he married Helena O’Hara who predeceased him on December 17, 2008. Fran was a graduate of Wellsville High School and was elected to the Wellsville Sports Hall of Fame for his many accomplishments in athletics. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater of Operation. He was employed at Worthington Corporation and Air Preheater Company in Wellsville, retiring in 1981. He was involved in the reality business for many years and founded “Sawyer Reality” in 1977. He was a life member of the Wellsville Elks Lodge # 1495, a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville; where he served as an usher and the Holy Name Society. He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Sandy Sawyer and a grandson, Patrick Sawyer both of Wellsville, a sister-in-law, Phyllis Sawyer of Whitesville as well as several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his son, James Sawyer and a brother, Robert Sawyer. A Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville with Rev. Sean DiMaria as Celebrant. There will be no prior visitation. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church or the Hart Comfort House.

Presvitera Irene Euphrosyne (Raptis) Mentis, 94, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 29, 2015. She was born in Johnsonburg, PA the daughter of the late George and Angeliki (Vlahos) Raptis and was raised in Wellsville, NY. In September 1945, she married Reverend Father Elias Mentis who survives. Father Mentis and Irene lived and touched the hearts of many in Wellsville, Toronto, Rochester, Webster, Jamestown, Ithaca, Brandywine, MD, Sioux City, IA, Ocean City MD, Fairfax/Falls Church, VA and Fredericksburg, VA. Irene will be remembered for her love of others, generosity, kindness and faith. Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Ann Mentis of Gulf Shores and Webster, NY; son, Peter, his wife Tina and their children, Elias, David and Euphrosyne of Fairfax, VA and their four grandchildren, Peter, Andreas, Alex and Lucas; son Charles, his wife Gail of Seneca Falls, NY and their two daughters, Elaine, her husband Michael and Ann Marie and one granddaughter, Mariana, sister, Leah of Rochester and a brother, James, and his wife Demmye of Wellsville, as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Charles, killed in WW II.

Philip H. Duke, 92, passed away at home, Saturday (Sept. 28, 2013) surrounded by family following a fearless struggle with blood cancer. Phil, a life-long Wellsville resident, had a strong reputation for love of country and community as mirrored in his years of volunteer and military service. He had over 50 years with the Grant Duke Hose Company, serving as Captain during the late 1960s. Phil held every lay position at St. John’s Episcopal Church over seven decades. During his later years he delivered Meals On Wheels often to people much younger than himself. His interests included golf, fly fishing, sports (Go Bills and Sabres!), aviation, and his church. After graduating from WHS, class of 1939, he attended William and Mary College while waiting to be called up for service during WWII. He served as a tail-gunner on the B-17, Torchy Tess, under the command of the 351st Bomb Group in Polebrook, England. Of his multiple military ribbons he was most proud of his Air Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters. He married Virginia (Ginnie) Geuder in 1944 and began working the local oil fields with his father. This period of his life he often recalled as his favorite, reflecting his love of hard work coupled with a love of the outdoors. Many people remember Phil’s willingness to provide helpful advice when he was the general manager of the Wellsville Lumber Company. He sought to protect Allegany County by his civil disobedience and subsequent arrest protesting the 1989-90 effort by New York State to establish a local nuclear waste dump site. His efforts along with many others ultimately led to the state looking elsewhere for a dumping location. Phil is predeceased by his parents, Harold and Ruth Duke of Wellsville, and his wife of 51 years, Ginnie. He is survived by his son, Philip Bruce Duke of Eagle River, Alaska, and his daughter, Reita (Duke) Novkov of Canal Fulton, Ohio, and sister, Nancy (Duke) McEachern of Beaufort, S.C. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Patrick Duke and Lisa (Duke) Duelm, of San Antonio, Texas, and Alexandra Kendrick of Winter Park, Fla., and three great-grandchildren. Special thanks are offered by his family to Teese and Satch Gary, his neighbors and angels; The Reverend Carol Stewart; and the staff of Jones Memorial Hospital. Calling hours will be at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home, Wednesday (Oct. 2, 2013) from 7-9 p.m. with a memorial service at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 3, 2013). The family has requested donations be made in lieu of flowers to either the Duke Hose Fire Company or to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Rita H. Hurd Taylor, 91, died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at the Wellsville Manor. Born October 27, 1921, in Bolivar, New York, she was the daughter of Myron H. and Pearl M. Hurd. A lifelong resident of Wellsville, New York, she graduated from Wellsville High School in 1939. A local historian and enthusiast of the Town of Wellsville, she actively researched the Hurd family genealogy and their contributions to the development of the town. She was an avid reader and enjoyed a myriad of interests in local western New York arts and crafts, including becoming a published authority on Glidden pottery. She especially loved all kinds of Teddy bears. As a teen she had worked at Stacy’s Ice Cream Parlor and still had her original ice cream scoop some 75 years later. She also worked for her mom and dad at the former Hurd’s Market on East State Street. She was a member of the Thelma Rogers G&H Society. She married Robert E. Taylor on August 9, 1962, and worked with her husband in his insurance business serving the citizens of Wellsville. Prior to that, she was married to Elmore Gibson Harkness, MD. She is survived by her one son: David B. Harkness and his wife Susan R. Harkness, two granddaughters: Lindsay G. Harkness, and Ashley R. Harkness of Edmond, Oklahoma; and two step-sons: Robert R Taylor and Richard L. Taylor and their respective families. In addition, she is also survived by two nieces and four nephews. Preceding her in death is her granddaughter, Heather L. Harkness, husband, Robert E. Taylor, her sisters, Arlene and Della and parents, Myron and Pearl Hurd. She had been a lifetime member of the Christian Temple Church of Wellsville. In consideration of her final wishes, she will be cremated and will not have a formal funeral service.

Doris Lena Clark, 87, died peacefully in her sleep Friday (April 24, 2009) at home. Mrs. Clark was born Aug. 15, 1921, in Wellsville, the daughter of Ray Lawrence and Anna Pearl (Ackerman) Dickens, and was a lifelong resident of Willing and Wellsville. She graduated from Wellsville High School in 1939 with honors. On Nov. 20, 1941, at the Christian Temple in Wellsville, she married Kenneth M. Clark, who survives. In addition to her husband of 67 years, Doris is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann (Bill) Farrell of Cuba; a son, Dennis R. (Adele) Clark of Palm Springs; two sisters, Marguerite (Rollin) Perkins of Porterville, Calif. and Betty Jane (Donald) Meissner of Massena; a granddaughter, Holly Anna (Fred) Kunderman of Niagara Falls; two great-grandchildren, Cole Kunderman and Kierra Kunderman, also of Niagara Falls; and several nieces and nephews. Doris was a member of Stannards United Methodist Church. She was a woman of many interests and enjoyed taking classes in a variety of subjects. She enjoyed painting both in watercolor and oil and was active in sewing, card and thinking games and genealogical research. She was an avid gardener, square dancer, newspaper correspondent and traveler. She was a volunteer for the Jones Memorial Hospital Country Fair and an Allegany County Board of Elections inspector. Additionally, she was a warm and friendly neighbor and helped her husband in his hearing aid business. But more than these, she was a faithful and loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family very much. Funeral service took place at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville, with Rev. Matthew Kofahl of the Stannards United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Stannards Cemetery, Stannards, NY. Memorial contributions in Doris’ name may be made to SPCA Serving Allegany County, State Route 19, Wellsville, NY 14895.

Lawrence H. Hawks, 95 of Casper, Wyoming, passed away Monday, November 4, 2013 He was born to the late Harley and Metta Hawks April 8, 1918, in Whitesville, New York. He Attended Wellsville High School. He married Mildred Dickey on March 15, 1942 Lawrence was a mechanic most his life. He was working at Cities Service in Hornell, New York when Mildred stopped to ask if she could use the phone. He went on to work at Worthington Steam Turbine in Wellsville, New York and then went on to work at Acme Electric in Cuba, New York with Mildred during the war. He was Head Bus Mechanic at Whitesville Central School, 1950-1952. They then moved to Spring Hope, North Carolina. He worked at a Studebaker and Buick Dealership 1952-1957. The family returned to New York; he worked at Grave’s Automotive in Standards, New York. After moving to Dansville, New York he worked for Shay’s Trucking and Owen’s Trucking. After retiring they moved to Casper in 1982 to be near his older daughter and family. Lawrence was always fixing things up around the house, when not doing that he would be working in the vegetable garden or his flowers. He was always bringing Mildred in a fresh rose or a bright red strawberry. He enjoyed fishing in the Big Horns. They traveled a great deal visiting family and friends Lawrence is survived by his wife, Mildred, one Brother, Arnold Hawks, of Wellsville, NY and two Daughters; Maxine Harris (Cecil) of Casper, WY and Susan Young (David) of Dansville, NY. He also is survived by eight Grandchildren; Tony Harris (Lynda) of Casper, WY, Brain Harris (Jody Correll) of Casper, WY, Craig Harris (Sheila) of Evansville, WY, Danny Harris (Rose Stinson) of Casper, WY, Chad Harris (Lula) of Fort Collins, CO, Jeffery Young of Beyersville, NY, Graig Young (Karen) of Rochester, NY and Michael Young (Amy) of Dansville, NY. He also has 14 Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Metta Hawks; Sisters, Alice VanSchoick, Barbara Herman, Alta Snyder and Brother, Jason Hawks. Raymond Vernon Rogers, May 28, 1922 – August 6, 2012, Age 90, of Orchard St., Silver Springs, NY died at his home on Monday, August 6, 2012 following a lengthy illness. He was born May 28, 1922 in Whitesville, NY where he spent his youth. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1939. Raymond enlisted in the US Marine Corps in November 1942. He was a Private First Class and an aviation and power supply mechanic. He served in the southwest Pacific area from April 1943 to December 1944 during which time he participated in the capture and occupation of Bougainville, the consolidation of the northern Solomon Islands and defense of PIVA Yoke. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. For several years, Raymond worked in his brother’s store, Rogers Hardware in Silver Springs where he resided until his death. As a skilled builder, he did carpentry work in the area for many years. Ray enjoyed flower gardening, crossword puzzles and rooting for any team that beats the Yankees. Raymond was employed by the US Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 22 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Bates-Courtney American Legion Post in Silver Springs and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife, Joan Schery Rogers whom he married on February 5, 1949; his sons, Brady Rogers of Greensboro, NC, Wade (Robin) Rogers of Plant City, FL; his daughters, Regina (Gary) Colgrove of Warsaw, Cherie (Sam) Gullo of Silver Lake, Kim Rogers of Clearwater, FL, Jill (Rick) Jeroski of Largo, FL; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; his brother, Maynard (Carolyn) Rogers of Lockport; his sisters, Helen Hall of Greenwood, NY, June Stadelman of Winter Park, FL; many kind and caring neighbors and friends. He was the brother of the late Arlene Spicer and Doris Lewis. Friends may call Saturday, August 11 from 1 – 4 PM at Robinson & Hackemer Funeral Home, 246 N. He died June 26, 2004, at Central Wyoming Hospice Home in Casper. Born July 23, 1922, in Clarksville, N.Y., he was the son of Robert A. and Clara (Maulby) Chandler. He was raised and educated in Wellsville, N.Y., graduating high school in 1939. He enlisted in the Army Corps of Engineers in December of 1941 and served with the Fifth Army in North Africa and Italy. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He spent his career life in the oil fields, working in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, North Dakota and Wyoming. He retired in 1986. Survivors include his sons, Gary Chandler of Bar Nunn, and Philip Chandler of Hernando, Fla.; his daughters, Patricia Aldrich and Deborah McNeib, both of Buffalo, N.Y.; a stepson, Norman Mesler, of Bolivar, N.Y.; his stepdaughters, Shirley Green and Patricia Reed, both of Wellsville; his brothers, Richard Chandler of Wellsville, and Victor Chandler of Arlington, Texas; a sister, Joan Quick of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Benjamin Saxton Kelley, of 471 N. Main St., Wellsville, died Sunday (Dec. 13, 2009). Born May 11, 1921, in Troy, Pa., he was the only son of Ethel Kenyon and John?Harrison Kelley. On May 10, 1957, in Atlanta, Ga., he married Gladys Amelia Lunsford (Happy) who survives. Mr. Kelley was a graduate of Wellsville High School, Class of 1939, where he was active in sports. He attended Cornell University and was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He was a graduate of New York University and the advanced management program of Harvard Business School. Mr. Kelley served in World War II attached to the Thermal Diffusion Division (SED) at Oak Ridge, Tenn. Mr. Kelley traveled extensively in charge of foreign and domestic sales for Air Preheater, a division of Combustion Engineering. He was a sales engineer in Chicago and the sales manager for the Southeastern U.S. at the Atlanta headquarters. In 1962, he returned to Wellsville as a sales manager and was later named vice president of sales, retiring in 1983. Mr. Kelley was a life member of ASME, the Georgia Engineering Society and the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. He was a past member of the Atlanta Athletic Club, the East Lake Country Club, the Wellsville Country Club and the Wellsville Rod and Gun Club. He was a past president of the United Way and treasurer of the advisory board of the Salvation Army. Mr. Kelley was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Wellsville. Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Susan (Richard)?Piekarski of Hudson, Ohio, Anne (Dennis)?Sobeck of Wellsville, and Sarah Newland Kelley of Downingtown, Pa.; five grandchildren, Richard, Garrett and Michael Piekarski and Benjamin and Elizabeth Sobeck; and a nephew, Michael C. Adelman of Ocean Pines, Md. He was predeceased by a sister, Amelia K. Signor of Wellsville. At his request, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Ralph Eastlack and Rev. William Jones officiating. Mrs. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in 1943. On May 14, 1944, she married Edwin B. Smith at the Sage Chapel at Cornell University in Ithaca. She and her husband owned and operated a Veterinary Practice on Church Street, for many years. Mrs.Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, and a former member of the St. Lawrence Wild Fowlers Carving Club and the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club.

Jack C. Miller formerly of Aspen Tower passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2012, the Pines Health and Rehab Center in Olean after a lengthy illness. Mr. Miller was born on Jan. 4, 1921 in Wellsville and is a son of Clarence L. and Lillian Hartung Miller. On Sept. 22, 1945 in the First Baptist Church of Olean he married Marion L. Guild who predeceased him. Mr. Miller was a graduate of Wellsville High School Class. He received Bachelor’s degree in business from St. Bonaventure in 1949. Mr. Miller served in the Air Force during World War II from Sept. 1, 1942 to Oct. 12, 1945. He and his family lived in a number of places including the eastern part of New York and Mobile Alabama. He worked for Billbrook Industries, an industrial auction comp,in Minneapolis, Minnesota for over 15 years retiring in 1990’s. They moved back o New York in 2002. He was a member of the Olean First Baptist Church and was also a member of the Olean American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and being outdoors but most of all he was true family man. Surviving Mr. Miller are two sons, Jeffrey G. (Nancy) Miller of Cumming, GA, and Stephen J. Miller of Costa Rica; a daughter, Marilyn G. (James) Lyons of Olean; seven grandchildren, Jimmy (Lori) Lyons, Kelley (Craig) Tarbox, Leahantte Frantz, Jennifer Mathias, Jeffrey (Debbie) Kalec, Stephen Miller, and Kimberly (Rodney) Reed; sixteen great grandchildren; one brother, Ronald Miller of Belmont; and one sister-in-Law, Norma Turner of Corpus Christi, TX. Alberta S. Handrahan, 80, of 12 Johnson St.died Sunday (May 27, 2001) in Jones Memorial Hospital. Born June 18, 1920, in Wellsville, she was a daughter of Rodney R. and Malinda C. Welch Sherwood. On April 16 1947,. in Wellsville, she married Richard Handrahan, who survives. In the late 1940s and 1950s Mrs. Handrahan and Marg Boring ran the Wellsville Country Club kitchen. She was a member of the Lady E1ks, Women of the Moose, American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Wellsville. In addition to her husband Mrs. Handrahan is survived by a son, Michael (Jeannie) Handrahan of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters, D. Malinda (William) Dean of Palm Bay, Fla., and Mary Jane (David) Allen of Austin, Texas; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There was no prior visitation. A memorial service was held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the David A. Howe Library, the SPCA serving Allegany County, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Robert G. Gardner, 83, of 153 W. State Street, passed away on Wednesday February 16, 2005 at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 25, 1921 at the home of his grandparents on Harder Place in Wellsville, the son of James and Marie (Myers) Gardner. He was a 1939 graduate of Wellsville High School, a veteran of WW II serving from 1943 to 1946 in the U.S. Army, with the 253rd. Combat Engineers Battalion, Company C. in the European Theater of Operation. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1946 he returned to the Gardner Pattern Works in Wellsville as an apprenticed wood pattern maker. He learned the trade from his father, who operated the business until his death in 1966. Bob then operated the pattern shop until it closed in 1993 when he retired. Bob was a 52 year member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge # 1495, serving as Exalted Ruler in 1952. He joined the Grant Duke Hose Company # 1 in Wellsville in 1941 and after the war held every elected office within the hose company. In 1959 he was elected 2nd. Asst. Chief and in April of 1961 was elected chief of the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department. He held the office of Town Councilman for 4 years and when he was elected Mayor of Wellsville in April of 1963; he was Fire Chief, Town Councilman and Mayor concurrently. He served as the Democrat Mayor of Wellsville for 29 years. During this period he held several positions with the NYS Conference of Mayors culminating with his election as President in June of 1974. In September of 1972 Mayor Gardner was appointed by Governor Nelson Rockefeller to the Intergovernmental Fiscal Advisory Board, representing more than 500 villages in New York State. He was a life member of the Morrison Hayes Post # 702 American Legion and the Frank B. Church Post # 2530 VFW for over 50 years. He was a proud member of his last man’s group the L.O.P.E.S. He was the Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” in 1987 and the “Elk of the Year” in 1992. He was a life long member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wellsville; baptized in 1923 and confirmed in 1934. He served on the Vestry of St. John’s for many years, held the office of Senior Warden for 2 terms and Junior Warden for 2 terms. He is survived by his wife, Norma Geoppner-Gardner, 7 children; Cheryl (Donald Andrews of St. Petersburg, FL, Sandra Le Crone of Amarillo, TX, Robert (Jackie) Gardner of Saranac Lake, NY, Stephen Gardner of San Francisco, CA, Donald Gardner of Amarillo, TX, Mary (James) Ruch of Almond, NY, Brian (Paula) Gardner of Wellsville, 2 stepsons, Dan (Rita) Geoppner of Wellsville, William (Sally) Geoppner of Angelica, 15 Grandchildren, 5 Great Grandchildren, a brother, John (Peggy) Gardner of Independence, KY, a sister, Jean (Charles) Brady of Wellsville and several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, James Gardner on July 28, 2002. Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville, the Elks service will follow visitation at 8:30 pm. The funeral will be Monday February 21st at 11:00 am at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wellsville, with Rev. James Curl as Celebrant. Military Honors will follow the service and Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial suggestions include St. John’s Episcopal Church or the Wellsville Elks Lodge Scholarship Fund.

Mrs. Kathryn Stevens, 91, died Monday, October 14, 2013. She was born in Singlehouse, PA on December 12, 1921 to John and Dorothy Perry Buckhout, who preceded her in death along with her husband, George Sheldon Stevens. She is survived by her daughters, Star Stevens, Ooltewah, TN, and Jewel Tillotson, Grantham, NH; grandchildren, Mandy and Jesse Tillotson; great grandson, Wolf Tillotson. A private graveside service will be held at the Cumberland Heights Memorial Gardens in Coalmont, Tennessee
