Gertrude Edith Palmer Peaslee, age 98, a longtime resident of Allentown, passed away on Monday (Oct. 3, 2016) at the Wellsville Manor Hills. She was the daughter of the late Harold and Eva Marjorie Barth Hunt. She was predeceased by her first husband, Edwin Palmer, and her second husband, Raymond Peaslee. She was also predeceased by 3 sisters, Betty, Geraldine and Helen; and a brother, Harold. She is survived by her only child, Howard Palmer (Jean) of California; 2 grandsons, James (Lisa) and Richard (Lisa); 4 great-grandchildren, Jarrod, Allison, Nathan and Ryan; her sister, Corrine Mathern of Wellsville. Gert will be remembered by many as the smiling, cheerful proprietor of Palmer’s General Store in Allentown, which she ran for more than 40 years. Honoring her wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private family service is planned. A celebration of her life will held at a later date. Remembrance donations may be made to the Allentown Methodist Church or the Allentown Fire Department.

Kathleen Finn Manion, 91, formerly of 186 South Brooklyn Avenue passed away Sunday evening, (February 27, 2011) at Highland Health Care Center in Wellsville. She was born March 9, 1919 in Olean, the daughter of Charles Leo and Theresa Irene (Shaw) Finn. On June 7, 1941 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, she married Gilbert Joseph Manion who predeceased November 1, 1992.Kathleen had a love of theater and was proud to be one of the original Nancy Howe Players, performing in the first play at the Nancy Howe Auditorium, as an office attendant in “Wisdom Teeth” July 1, 1937. She was a 1936 graduate of Wellsville High School, a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Women’s Club, Bishop’s Committee and the Lord’s Housekeepers. She was first employed as a secretary for the Graham Insurance Agency in Wellsville and in 1961 became an executive secretary for the Sales Department of Worthington/Turbodyne Corporation, retiring in October of 1983. She was a loving mother to her immediate and extended family, and is survived by her son, Patrick (Donna) Manion of Bow, NH, her daughter, Kathleen Ann Manion of Wellsville, three grandchildren, Maria (Sean) Casey and Theresa Manion both of Burbank, CA and John Manion of Bow, NH, two great-grandchildren, Helena and Gillian Casey, a sister, Rita Ayala of Levittown, NY as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Manion, four brothers, William, Joseph, Leo and Michael Finn and two sisters, Mary Bordonaro and infant sister, Josephine. As a young child Kathleen displayed vitality for life as noted by the nuns in grade school who often stated, “She may be little but, Oh My!” In her later years “Kay” as many knew her, loved to tend to her beautiful flower gardens and enjoyed watching the birds at her bird feeder. Kathleen’s family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the entire staff at Highland Health Care for the compassionate attention bestowed upon their mother. Friends are invited to call in Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Friday, from 11:00 to 11:30 am at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday (February 4, 2011) at 12 noon in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville with Monsignor Vincent Becker as celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to the David A. Howe Public Library or to the Immaculate Conception School.

Rose E. Trask of the River Road passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the Highland Health Care Center surrounded by her family. She was born on September 22, 1919 in Brooklyn, PA. to Bort and Mary Corte Colo Molin. On September 20, 1947 she married Roy W. Trask who survives. Rose graduated from Wellsville High School and from Rochester Business Institute in Wellsville. She went to work for Umiker’s Market in Wellsville and later moved to Detroit, MI. In 1944 Rose joined the WAC’s and served as a medical technician leaving the service in 1945 as a corporal. She returned to Wellsville and went back to work for Umiker’s. She later worked at Frederick’s Market and at Linza’s Meat Market as a butcher and a baker. Rose enjoyed her family, all of her grand children and great grandchildren and playing bingo. She was a member of the American Legion Post 702 of Wellsville, the Wellsville Fireman’s Auxiliary and the Immaculate Conception Church. Survivors include: her husband Roy; a son, Phillip (Catherine) Trask of Olean; 2 daughters, Sharon Haney of Bolivar and Sheila (Kenneth) Molloy Jr. of Wellsville; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Joanne Molin and Mary (Gene) Wilson both of Wellsville; several nieces and nephews Rose was predeceased by; 2 sons, Stephen T. Trask and John A. Trask; 3 sisters, Helen Geracci, Virginia Blasdell and Flora Molin; 4 brothers, Leo, Florio, Peter and Bruno Molin. Friends are invited to a memorial service with full military honors to be held on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 1 pm in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. Father Vincent Becker will preside and memorials may be made to the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps, or to the Wellsville Fire Department, or to the Immaculate Conception Church, or to the American Legion Post 702.

Valerio J. “Larry” Lauzze formerly of East State Street passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2011, at the Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 7, 1918 in Wellsville to Joseph and Philomina Serio Lauzze. On January 23, 1950 in Wellsville he married Paula Vossler who predeceased him in December of 2004.Larry graduated from Wellsville High School in 1936. He worked for the family business, the Candy Kitchen, and attended an electrical trade school. In 1940 he enlisted in the US Navy. Larry spent WWII on various sub tenders as an electricians mate in the Atlantic Ocean and off of the Aleutian Islands. After the war Larry worked for a short time in New York City repairing elevators. Upon returning to Wellsville he began work as electrician for Air Preheater and later retired from Dresser Rand in the early 1980’s. Larry learned to play the piano at an early age and enjoyed playing while visiting the nursing homes with the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Whenever possible Larry attended Masses said in Latin and he enjoyed socializing at the local service clubs. His memberships include: The Immaculate Conception Church, Saint Vincent DePaul Society, Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion, Elks and Moose all of Wellsville. Survivors include: A son Paul (Shallee) Lauzze of Whitesville; a daughter, Valerie (Fred) Woodward of Clifton Park; 2 grandsons, Joseph and Nicholas Lauzze; several nieces and nephews. Larry was predeceased by 2 brothers, Ralph and Anthony Lauzze; a sister, Mary Rose Seeley Friends are invited to call on Sunday, October 2, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A Prayer service will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday at 10:30 am. Norma Mae Thompson, age 96, of South Brooklyn Avenue passed away on Thursday June 4, 2015 at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 25, 1919 in Wellsville to Edward and Carrie Foster Wightman. On June 13, 1941 at the Christian Temple Church she married Harold G. Thompson who predeceased her on February 1, 2005 after 63 years of marriage. Norma started school in the Proctor District’s 2 room school house. She then graduated from Wellsville Central High School in 1936. Norma worked at the former Cretekos Brothers Confectionary for 8 years and later became a licensed real estate sales person working for Winters Real Estate for 10 years. Norma was a Notary Public, a Den Mother, honorary life member of the Wellsville PTA, past member of the Wellsville Woman’s Bowling Association as well as several other bowling leagues, Wellsville Grand Squares Dance Club and the Penn-NY Promenaders Camping and Dancing Club. Norma was also a member of the Christian Temple Church of Wellsville who enjoyed following the Detroit Tigers, the New York Giants, and the Buffalo Sabers. Survivors include 2 sons, Douglas (Sue) Thompson of Portville and Robert (Priscilla) Thompson of Wellsville; 4 grandchildren, Daniel (Amy) Thompson of Little Rock, AR., Nicole Ackerman of Little Rock AR., Kelly (Jay) Smith of Wellsville and John (Hanah) Thompson of Wellsville; 7 great grandchildren, Matthew Thompson, Lindsey Buchholz, Kira Ackerman, Haeden Smith, Maddex Smith, Madison Thompson and Christopher Thompson; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Norma was predeceased by her parents; her husband; 2 sisters, Hazel and Mildred Wightman; 6 brothers, Richard, Allen, Frederick, Walter, Robert and Earl Wightman. At Norma’s request there will be no prior visitation or public funeral. The family will have a burial service in Woodlawn Cemetery at their convenience and memorials may be made to the Allegany County SPCA.

Janet W. Williams Browning, of Rochester, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2014), after a brief illness in Cape Coral, Fla., where she was visiting her children. She was born in Wellsville, on Nov. 4, 1919, and lived there nearly all of her life. She was the daughter of John and Beatrice Williams. She graduated from Wellsville High School at the age of 16. She married William Browning Sr. on Aug. 31, 1940, in Wellsville. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Geneseo, and taught kindergarten at the Scio Central School in Scio, for 26 years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Wellsville since 1947, a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority since 1943, and a member and past president of the Monday Club. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association. Janet was an avid bridge player. After retirement, she and her husband owned and operated Browning Antiques and Collectibles in Wellsville and participated in antique shows around the country. She and her husband also traveled extensively in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean, as well as in the U.S. and Canada. Janet loved people and nurtured close relationships with her own family and with her many friends who became “family” to her. She enjoyed discussions about politics, religion, and current events. She had an inquiring mind; she wanted to understand why things were the way they were. She left behind a stack of birthday cards with notes ready to be sent to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. Although her eyesight and hearing failed in her later years, she was not stopped by these afflictions. She devoured books on tape and arranged numerous social events at her apartment making certain that everyone was included. She exhibited dignity, courage, grace, strength, intelligence, warmth, empathy and humor throughout her life, including her final days. She will be missed by so many people. She was an inspiration to everyone. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, William (Bud) W. Browning Sr. of Wellsville; great-grandson, Joshua Davis of Glenmoore, Pa.; sister, June Lee of Houston, Texas. She is survived by son, William (Barbara) Browning Jr. of Cape Coral, Fla.; two daughters, Kay (Stephen) Jacobstein of Rochester, and Pamela (Gary) Kimmet of Rochester; grandchildren, Heather Regan of Austin, Texas, Stacy (Barclay) Davis of Glenmoore, Pa., Tasha (Scott) Buser of Pleasanton, Calif., William (Alexandra Podwalny) Browning III of Austin, Texas, Amanda (Michael) Miller of Syracuse, Nicholas (Elizabeth) Paul of Winnetka, Ill., Christopher (Lisa) Paul of Scarsdale, Adam Paul of Los Angeles, Calif., Darcy (Paul) Koreen of Mississauga, Ontario Canada, Ryan (Leah) Kimmet of Danbury, Conn.; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia McQueen of Rochester; brother, John (Joan) Williams of Stuart, Fla.; as well as several nieces and nephews. A private family interment was held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville. A celebration of her life will be scheduled in Wellsville, during Memorial Day weekend 2014. Alice Marie Clark, 86, of St. James, FL died January 12, 2005 after a long and courageous struggle with Alzheimers Disease. Mrs. Clark was born August 1, 1918 in Wellsville, NY a daughter of the late Charles and Lena Gaus Knepfler. She was the widow of Norris W. Clark. Alice was a Registered Nurse and retired in 1973 as Supervisor of the Erie County Health Dept. in Buffalo, NY. She was past president of the St. James City Hobby Club and Homemaker’s Club. Alice was active with the Friends of the Library of Pine Island. An avid bridge player, Alice was a Master Bridge player and taught bridge and played with various bridge clubs on Pine Island. She also belonged to the VFW Post 4353 Ladies Auxiliary of Pine Island. She had resided here since 1973 coming from North Tonawanda, NY. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Paul) Cordy of St. James City, FL; her sons, Norris W. “Bill” (Rosaline) Clark of Ft. Myers, FL and Dennis R. (Marlys) Smith of Chaska, MN, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2005 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Coral Ridge Funeral Home. The family will be present to receive friends on Saturday from 1-2 PM prior to services. Interment will follow in Coral Ridge Cemetery. Margaret T. Flanagan, 85, of 160 Seneca Street, passed away on January 27, 2005 at the Highland Health Care Center. She was born on March 27,1919 in the Town of Willing to George and Agnes Trahey Flanagan. She was a graduate of WellsvilleHigh School and Myer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo. She was a private duty nurse and then worked at Jones Memorial Hospital until 1944. Margaret served with the Army Nurses Corp from 1944 to 1946. After the war she worked in both the Buffalo and BataviaVA’s and later was an Industrial Nurse for Union Carbide in Niagara Falls, Western Electric in Buffalo and for Cincinnati Bell retiring in 1984. Margaret was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville and is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by 2 brothers Robert and Walter Flanagan and 4 sisters Mary Catherine Reed, Ruth Flanagan, Jane Englebaugh and Betty Flanagan. Friends are invited to call on Saturday from 10 am to 10:30 am at which time a prayer service will be held in the J.W. Embser & Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am in the Immaculate Conception Church with Father Dennis Wolf as celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery and memorials may be to either the Immaculate Conception Memorial Fund or to the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Marguerite Perkins, 95, passed away on May 24, 2014, in Staunton, Va. She was born on March 15, 1919, in Wellsville, N.Y., and graduated from Wellsville High School in 1936. Marguerite married Rollin Perkins, also from Wellsville, on May 21, 1943, in Anniston, Ala., where Rollin was stationed with the US Army. They had two children, Jim and Jane. Prior to her retirement, Marguerite worked as a bookkeeper. Then, along with her husband, co-owned and operated Short’s Service Station and Grocery Store in Scio, N.Y., from 1952-1960. From 1960-1973, she worked as a dental assistant in Belmont, N.Y., leaving that position to provide full-time care for her mother. Following her mother’s death, Marguerite decided to pursue her life-long dream of owning a floral shop. After attending Hixon’s School of Floral Design in Lakewood, Ohio, she and Rollin owned and operated Perkins’ Florist from 1975-1981. Then, in 1982, Marguerite became the bookkeeper for the Town of Scio and continued in that position for 14 years, retiring at the age of 77. Marguerite was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She lived in the Wellsville/Scio area for 82 years, then moved with her husband, to Porterville, Calif., in 2001 to be near their daughter and family. Two years after Rollin’s death in 2010, Marguerite moved to Staunton, Va., where she was close to her son and was given wonderful care and assistance by the staff at Birch Gardens. Marguerite will always be remembered for her smile and the kindness she shared with everyone she became acquainted with. The love of her family, no matter how far away, was always the most important thing to her. Marguerite was predeceased by her husband of 67 yrs., Rollin; her parents, Pearl and Ray Dickens; and her sisters, Doris Clark and Betty Meissner. Surviving are her son, Dr. James (Linda) Perkins of Waynesboro, Va., and daughter, Jane (Kenneth) Caves, of Springville, Calif.; five grandchildren: Julie Barger of Lynchburg, Va.; Rebecca Flowers of Waynesboro, Va.; Brett Wingfield, of Sidney, Neb.; Eric (Amanda) Wingfield of Porterville, Calif.; and Erin (Marianella) Caves, of Frankfort, Germany; and nine great-grandchildren. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Birch Gardens in Staunton, Va., for their wonderful care and friendship they provided to Marguerite during her time with them. Arrangements are under the direction of McDow Funeral Home & Crematory, Waynesboro, Va., where a memorial service will be held on June 6, 2014. Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Scio, N.Y.

Catherine B. “Kay” McFadden Piper, 84, of 19 Vista Drive, Candler, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at the Hospice Solace Center. Mrs. Piper was born in Clearfield, PA, and was a daughter of the late Robert F. and Margaret Garrity Bolam. She had lived in Buncombe County since 1983 and she was a member of NARFE Chapter #156 and an active member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. She was married to the late Francis H. McFadden, with whom she had six children, Patricia Greenstein of Greenville, NC, Mary McFadden, Margaret “Peggy” Crandell, Denise Kubic, and Dennis McFadden, of Olean, NY, and Daniel McFadden of Endicott, NY. Following Mr. McFadden’s death in 1956, she married Edward W. Piper, who survives her, and acquired two children through this marriage, J. Frank Wingard and Charlene Metcalf. She is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Marie Tracy of Bolivar, NY, fifteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am Monday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church with the Rev. C. Morris Boyd officiating. Burial will be later in the week at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wellsville, NY. A Rosary is scheduled for 6:00 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, after which her family will receive friends. Her family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 919 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806, or to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building One, Asheville, NC 28801.

Meda E. Miller, a former resident of Wellsville, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in Oklahoma City.OK. She was born on January 25,1918 in Wellsville to Harry and Estella Durfee Nicholson. On March 17,1939 in Jasper she married Raymond L. Miller who predeceased her on April 15, 2001. Meda was a graduate of Wellsville High School in 1936 and had worked for the former Big N Department Store in Wellsville. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wellsville. Survivors include: 2 sons Gerald R. [Jane] Miller of Scottsdale, AZ. And David H. [Sandra] Miller of Edmond,OK.; 4 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Fern Morrison. Friends are invited to a funeral service on Tuesday December 9 at 10am in the J.W. Embser & Sons F.H. in Wellsville with Rev. Lee Williams presiding. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery and donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
