William “Toby” Thomas

August 23, 1945 ~ February 7, 2018

William “Toby” Thomas passed away at home on Wednesday, February 7th at 72 years of age after recently receiving a kidney from his eldest daughter. Bill was born in Wellsville, NY the son of Ralph and Lillian Thomas. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1963 and attended both C.C.C. and Mansfield University where he played basketball and football. He will be remembered by his wife of 51 years, Joanne; their four children, Kim Thomas Sprague (Scott), Chris Thomas (Amy), Lindsay Thomas Ruocco (Nick) and Kaley Thomas (fiancé Jeff Yaniak); their 5 grandchildren Sydney, Makenna, Lauren, Caden and Madison; sisters Evelyn Brechbill (Ivan) and Jane Good and brother, Jim Thomas (Jean).  Bill was self-employed for over 35 years, starting two businesses with his wife; Custom Kitchens followed by Cedar St. Market, in Corning, NY. In business and in life there was never a project too large or challenging. He was an extremely friendly person who knew many customers by name and everyone he encountered remembered him. He had a gregarious personality and loved to get to know people.  Something he was very proud of was building a new restaurant in Hammondsport, NY and helping his youngest daughter start a business, the Timber Stone Grill, now accepting reservations for spring. If you knew Toby, he was always promoting business and helping his family ; )  An avid auction attender, both in person and online, Bill frequented anything from produce and plant auctions to boat auctions, eventually accumulating an armada of vessels. He was an amazing father and grandfather who would do anything to assist his family in achieving their dreams and was their biggest cheerleader, even coaching his youngest granddaughter’s basketball team with all the kids calling him “grandpa” by the end of the season.  On Saturday, February 17 calling hours will be held from 1:00pm-3:00pm and a Memorial Service will be held at 3:00pm at Carpenters Funeral Home, 14 E Pulteney St, Corning, NY 14830. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Finger Lakes Boating Museum 8231 Pleasant Valley Rd, Hammondsport, NY 14840.

 

 


Norman Q. Smitih

It is with a heavy heart we announce that on May 13, 2021 Retired, SMsgt Norman Q Smith passed away peacefully in his Plattsburgh home surrounded by his loved ones.  Born September 30, 1942 to Raymond Alfus Smith and Helen Ruby Smith (Cole) in Canisteo NY.  He was a graduate of Wellsville Senior high school Class of 63′. In 1965, Norman Married his high school sweetheart Gloria L Osgood and enlisted in The United States Air Force.  He was stationed at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Loring Air Force base, Maine as well as parts of Asia during the Vietnam conflict, Finally, arriving at Plattsburgh Air Force base (PAFB) in 1970 as an aircraft mechanic (OMS), he was transferred into Quality Control/Quality Assurance and finally retired as the PAFB Wing safety NCO in 1991.  He served his country with honor, and dedication. Norman was not known to brag about his military career or accomplishments. He simply said he made sure the planes went up, did what they were supposed to do and at the end of the day the pilots and crew went home to their families.  While he had an accomplished military career, those who knew him well, remember him best, as “Norm”, with a fishing pole in one hand and a cold beer in the other, somewhere out on the lakes and rivers of upstate NY that he loved.  Norman is survived by his wife of 55 years Gloria L Smith (Osgood). Son Norman E Smith and his wife Andrea of SC. Son Patrick I Smith and his partner Cheryl Vlahos of NY, Son Douglass M Smith and his wife Anna of NY. As well as 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a vast extended family.  He will always be remembered as a dedicated military veteran, loving husband and father, caring and comical grandfather/ great grandfather and a true friend.  Norman lived his life with a simple motto. “Life is meant to be lived, death is inevitable, and all you can do is be your best with the time you have.”  At his request, no services will be held. He only asked that you remember him for the man he was and know that he felt blessed to have known you all.  He will be missed!

 


Dale N. Bledsoe

May 2, 1945 ~ January 27, 2021

Dale N. Bledsoe, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 27, 2021) at Strong Memorial Hospital, from complications of COVID-19.  He was born May 2, 1945, in Wellsville, to the late Merle and Grace Abbey Bledsoe.  Dale served in the U.S. Air Force, retired from Alstom and after retirement drove for Bokman.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 808, HOG and Allegany County Veterans.  Dale enjoyed traveling to visit family or just see the country. He loved riding his Harley and spending time with family and friends. He never met a stranger and will be missed by all.  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce; children, Angela (Guy) Humphrey, Alinda (Ron) Mulligan and Scott (Davina) Bledsoe; grandchildren, Brian, Michele, Tabitha, Curtis, Corrie, Cynthia, Andrew and Carena; eight great-granchildren; siblings, Russell, Anita (Doug) Gee and Carlton; mother-in-law, Joanne Rahr; brother-in-law, Donovan (Deb) Rahr; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters-in-law, Lois and Marlene Bledsoe; two nieces, Kelly and Sheri Bledsoe; and his father-in-law, Harold Rahr.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Allegany County Vets or the Hart Comfort House.

 


Gary Charles Allen

Gary Charles Allen, 74, of Wellsville, NY passed away peacefully at Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville, on August 1st, 2020, after a sudden brief illness.  Gary is survived by his children, Shane Allen and Holly (Allen) Perkins; son-in-law Christopher Perkins; his grandchildren, Alexander and Reegan Perkins; sister Suzanne (Allen) Rehler and wife Susan (Bellows) Allen. He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Elma (Ritter) Allen of Wellsville.  Gary was born on December 29, 1945. He graduated Wellsville High School class of 1963. Shortly after was drafted to the US Army to serve in the Vietnam War. After returning from active tour, he started his 42-year career working at (what is known today as) LJUNGSTRÖM, (Formally known as CE Air Preheater), where here he met and married Susan Bellows. While raising two children together with Susan, working full-time, and lovingly providing for his family, Gary completed his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Empire State College in Business Management and Economics. He founded and established Computer Solutions in Wellsville. Continuing work with Air Preheater, led him to establishing ABB ATT Tamar Consortium in Spain for the international manufacture of ABB products.  Later in life, Gary retired to Florida where he enjoyed building, machining, and restoring hit & miss engines. Gary was an avid wine maker, enjoyed hunting and actively played golf.  Throughout his life he was involved in several organizations: Past Master Order of Demolay, a free and accepted Mason, he served as Chief of Willing Fire Department and was named Allegany County Fireman of the Year and was also a Past President and active member of the Wellsville Lions Club.  With accordance to his wishes, no funeral or reception is scheduled and his body will be cremated. Carol K. Cline, 75, of 1804 Plank Road passed away at home on Sunday, July 12, 2020 following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born June 8, 1945 in Portland, ME, the daughter of the late Norman and Marjorie (Dow) Shear. On December 12, 1987, in Penfield, she married Dale O. Cline who survives.  Carol was raised in Wellsville and was a 1963 graduate of Wellsville High School. She resided in Oakdale, PA from 1971 to 1986, then moved to the Rochester area. She and Dale were members of HOG (Harley Owners Group) and the enjoyed boating and traveling, especially HOG rallies.  Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Terri (Bob) Barbour-Ducsay of Canonsburg, PA, Kelley Martin of Northampton, PA, and Michelle Evans of Jacksonville, FL, a step-son, Jeff (Jodi) Cline of Penfield, nine grandchildren, Christopher Barbour, RJ O’Leary Samantha Evans, Ryan O’Leary, Dr. Tyler Barbour, Brittney Ducsay, Meagan O’Leary, Joey Cline and Jordan Cline, a half-brother, Dan Kervin of North Kingstown, RI, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Kendall “Gary” Kervin.  The family would like to extend their appreciation to Deb Yackel for the loving care she offered Carol over the years. Friends are invited to a graveside service on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at 1:00 pm in Woodlawn Cemetery, 276 South Main Street in Wellsville, NY. William W. “Bill” Wixson

William W. “Bill” Wixson, 76, of Wellsville, NY, died Tuesday, July 21, 2020 in Highland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.   Born December 3, 1943, in Wellsville, he was the son of Donald F. and Laura M. Welstead Wixson.  A graduate of Wellsville Central School, he attended RIT in 1964 for drafting and Alfred State College in 1965 for floral design.  Bill was employed by Kerton’s Floral in his younger years and then as a mechanic by Pfuntner’s, Bill Garvey Cadillac Olds, his own auto shop, Wixson Auto Repair, and Cook’s Auto until his retirement.  Bill was a member of the Trail Blazer’s 4-H club and Boy Scouts of America.  He was a woodworker, gunsmith, and an antique enthusiast.  Surviving are:  longtime companion, Katherine C. Truax;  two children, Amy Whitesell of Austintown, OH and Douglas (Ida) Wixson of Pembroke Pines, FL;  four grandchildren, James (Misty) Wixson of Salamanca, Tyler Wixson of Boca Roton, FL, Jordan Whitesell of Canfield, OH, and Justin Whitesell of Austintown, OH;   three great-grandchildren;  a sister, Lois (Louis) Leotta of Gowanda;  nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James Wixson.  Cremation was at Olney-Foust Crematory.  Services will be private.  Arrangements are under the direction of Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home, Wellsville.

 

 

 

 


 

Alan Peck

October 8, 1946 ~ July 24, 2019

Alan D. “Big Al” Peck, 73, passed away Wednesday (July 24, 2019) at home.  Alan was born on Oct. 8, 1946 to Robert Ernest Sr. and Phoebe (Clark) Peck. He was a 1963 graduate of Wellsville Central School. He later served in the United States Marine Corps.  Al worked many jobs in the Wellsville area over the years. He worked 12 years with Allegany Arc as a custodian; he cleaned for the Wellsville VFW and worked with his Uncle Jack at Reach All Tree Service in Wellsville. Al is survived by a sister, Myrtle G. Walters of Wellsville; a sister-in-law, Carol Peck of Andover; his Aunt Jane and Uncle Howard Peck of Wellsville; a special niece, Kim (Tom) Layman of Belmont; a great friend, Rick Price of Wellsville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Ernest Peck, Jr. and Jim Peck.  There were two things that were very important to Al. He was a life-long Buffalo Bills fan and he was a proud American Patriot. He always had his Buffalo Bills jacket with him and his scooter was always decked out with the American flag. Al had a unique sense of humor and those that knew him well knew not to take him too seriously.  Al was a member of the American Legion Morrison Hayes Post 702 in Wellsville; the Wellsville VFW and the Wellsville Loyal Order of Moose Lodge.  There will be no prior visitation. A memorial service with full military honors will be held on Saturday (August 17) at 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion Morrison Hayes Post 702. A private graveside service in Woodlawn Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.

Jerry L. WILLIAMS, 72, of Wellsville, NY, passed away Friday, June 22, 2018 in his home.   Born August 20, 1945, in Wellsville, he was the son of Glenn W. and Esther Wallace Williams.   He was employed by Air Preheater in Wellsville.  Jerry was a member of the Willing Volunteer Fire Dept., Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Wellsville VFW Post #2530, Wellsville Moose Lodge #601, and a proud Eagle Scout.  He was an avid camper and loved NASCAR races.    Surviving are:  a daughter, Nancy S. (James) Swift of Ohio;  three grandchildren Timothy (Katie) Swift of Ohio, Zachery Swift of Oklahoma, and Joshua Swift of Ohio;  a sister, Judy Matteson of Addison, NY;  a brother, Eddie Williams of Horseheads, NY;  several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by to his parents.  A private graveside service will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville.  The Rev. Gregory DeSalvatore will officiate.  Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

 


Mary Morrison-Eldridge

Mary F. Eldridge, 72, of Wellsville, NY, died Tuesday, March 27, 2018 in Hart Comfort House, Wellsville, NY. Born April 23, 1945, in Wellsboro, PA, she was the daughter of Henry A. and Daphne L. Babcock Morrison. On August 7, 1965, in Wellsville, she married Max Russell Eldridge, who survives. A graduate of Wellsville Central School, she began her working career as a telephone operator in Wellsville and attended New Penn Beauty School in Olean. She owned and operated a beauty shop in Wellsville for several years. She was then employed by Highland Park as a nurse’s aide and retired from the Wellsville school cafeteria. Mary was a member of the First Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wellsville. Surviving besides her husband, Max, are: two children, Thomas Eldridge of Wellsville and Laurie (Nathan) Munley of Buffalo;   four grandchildren, Julie (Dustin White) Eldridge, Cameron Munley, Eian Munley, and Lillian Munley; a great-grandson, Chase White; a brother, Richard (Sandra) Morrison of Virginia Beach, VA; nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, James Morrison; and a niece, Meridee Morrison. Mary’s family gratefully acknowledges her many neighbors and friends for their care and support during her illness. Mary was very appreciative of their many kindnesses. Beverly Dixon

July 23, 1944 ~ February 3, 2017

Beverly J. Dixon, 72, of 3456 Baldwin Road, died Friday (Feb. 3, 2017) at Wellsville Manor Care Center.  She was born July 23, 1944, in Wellsville, a daughter of the late Donald and Arletta Hall Dixon.  Beverly was a 1963 graduate of Wellsville High School. She began her career at Super Duper and later worked at Loblaws until it closed. She then worked for her mother and grandaunt at Sarge’s Sub Shop on South Main Street in Wellsville. Beverly, her mother and her sister then started Dixon’s Sub Shop in Olean, which later moved to West Fassett Street in Wellsville, operating there until it closed in 1979. She then started a 20-year career at Jones Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1999. During those years she also cleaned the offices of Dr. Sale and Dr. Graham in Wellsville, and Dr. Coch and Dr. Ogden in Andover. In 1999, she started Dixon’s Sub Shop on the Bolivar Road in Wellsville, running it until it closed in 2005. She then was employed by Save-A-Lot and Wellsville Elementary School as a lunch monitor, where she enjoyed the children very much.  Beverly enjoyed baking hundreds of dozens of cookies, wedding cakes and all sorts of goodies over the years. She also enjoyed spending time with her family both in Wellsville and Clearfield, Pa. She is survived by a brother, David (Peggy) Dixon of Wellsville; a nephew, Joshua Dixon; a niece, Jasmine Dixon; a grandniece, Aleeya Billings; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She also had a beloved Boston terrier, Jo-Jo. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Colleen D. Dixon, on June 1, 2014. A  private service is being planned for a later date. Burial will be with her parents and sister in Woodlawn Cemetery.  Memorials donations can be made to the SPCA Serving Allegany County or the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Donna E. Dixon, 73, of Wellsville, N.Y., died Thursday (Sept. 6, 2018) in Hart Comfort House, Wellsville.  Born May 30, 1945, in Wellsville, she was the daughter of Newell and Helen Marsh Potter. On September  14, 1963, in Greenwood, she married Charles D. Dixon, who predeceased her on Aug. 2, 2001.  She was by employed Lester Chevrolet and Funland. Donna was a member of the Greenwood Church of Christ and the Fire Department Auxiliary in Wellsville. She loved listening to music at the VFW and American Legion, crocheting, knitting, ceramics, crafts, and playing cards. Donna was well known as an excellent pie baker.  Surviving are two children, Lynn (Connie) Dixon of Wellsville and Helen (Joel) Evans of Angelica; five grandsons, Sean (Siobhan) Dixon, Michael Evans, Bryan Evans, James Dixon, and Brodyn Evans; a sister, Mary (Fred) Gates of Scio; a cousin, Tommy Davis; goddaughter, Kristen Loeffler Tower; her step-mother, Betty Potter; nieces and nephews.  Friends may call at Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home, Wellsville on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018 from noon – 2 p.m., with Funeral Services following at 2 p.m. The Rev. Terry Smith will officiate. John “Jack” O’Donnell

John “Jack” O’Donnell passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 with his family by his side. Jack was born in Buffalo, NY the son of the late George W. and Miriam E. (Weymouth) O’Donnell. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1963 and Mansfield University in 1968 with a degree in Elementary Education. He later received his Administrative Degree from SUNY Cortland. Jack was extremely proud of his career in education which began as a fifth grade teacher in the Corning Painted Post Area School District. He went on to become assistant principal at CFA Middle School and later West High School. Jack attained his career goal when he accepted the position of principal at the Campbell-Savona Jr/Sr High School. In all areas of his career, Jack created lasting friendships with parents, students, and staff.  Jack was a dedicated member of his church. He served in a variety of leadership roles including the Board of Deacons, church moderator, and usher. An avid sports fan, Jack closely followed the Buffalo Bills, the Syracuse Orangemen, and the NY Yankees. He enjoyed his time on the golf course, and was always very proud of his children and grandchildren’s involvement in their chosen sport.Jack is survived by his wife, Pauletta, son Scott (Dawn) O’Donnell of Poway, CA, daughter Julie (Eric) Pusateri of Painted Post, NY, grandchildren Jacob, Shea, and Camdyn O’Donnell, Madelyn Pusateri, sisters Patricia Mueller of Melbourne, FL, and Winifred Dincher of El Paso, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 27 from 4-7 pm at Phillips Funeral Home 17 W. Pulteney St. Corning. A service in celebration of Jack’s life will be held on Saturday, September 28 at 2 pm at the First Congregational United Church of Christ 171 W. Pulteney Street, Corning, NY with interment directly following the service at the Fairview Cemetary, Painted Post, NY. A reception will follow at the Raddison Hotel 125 Denison Pkwy E. Corning, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Jack O’Donnell Scholarship Fund for the Campbell-Savona Central School District and the Corning-Painted Post School District. David  McClure

David Eugene McClure, 66, of Harvard, MA, died unexpectedly on November 15th, 2011. David was born on May 9th, 1945 and grew up in Wellsville, NY. He attended the University of Rochester. He was a Senior Consulting Engineer who had a long career with Digital Equipment Corporation, subsequently Compaq Corporation and Hewlett Packard. David loved cooking, woodworking, gardening, and sewing: hobbies he shared freely with all of his children. His family will treasure the gifts he made and presented to them on special occasions. He also loved music, especially opera. His true home was on Lake Winnipesaukee, where he spent as much time as possible. Boating was one of his passions, and he would take the Sunfish or kayak out on days when anyone else would have been sitting by the fire. David’s children remember fondly the joyful summers they spent with him in Wolfeboro and cherish the love and humor he shared in every moment. He was always willing to do whatever it took to help them: from giving a ride to cooking a duck to providing a job. David was predeceased by his parents, Theodore McClure and Elsbeth Riggs, and his two brothers, Philip and John. He will be missed by his children, Sean, Tara, Hilary, Joseph, Winifred, John, Emily and Morgan and his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Justin, William, Theodore, James, Joseph and Jaxon, and by Susan and Lydia, his two former wives, as well as by Terri Whitney, his partner of ten years. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Chapel in Shirley, MA, at 11 AM on Saturday, December 10th, followed by a reception at Lydia’s home in Groton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arnold Arboretum or WBUR.

 


James H. Eichler

James H. Eichler, 68, of Erie and formerly of Olean, Wellsville, and Rochester, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y. on December 30, 1944 a son of the late James C. and Anna Marie Hall Eichler.  Jim graduated from Alfred State College and Rochester Institute of Business and went on to work for Amsco (American Sterilizer). Most recently he worked in Quality Control with Erie Press Systems. He was a licensed realtor in Pennsylvania and New York and was very proud of his apartment houses. He was a member of the Zukor, Siebenbuerger, and Maennerchor Clubs. Following his lung transplant at the Cleveland Clinic, he was given three more quality years to spend with his family and friends. He was known to have a great sense of humor and following his passing, he donated his eyes so that someone could see the world through his eyes. The family would like to thank the Cleveland Clinic for allowing Jim to celebrate his life. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Joann Hanson Eichler; two daughters, Victoria Linkner and her husband Greg of Geneva, N.Y. and Stephanie Hamner and her husband Gary of Summerville, S.C.; one brother, Thomas Eichler and his wife Colleen of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Keith, Chris, Joseph, Sarah “Princess”, and Gabriella; his puppies, Izzy and Stella; many dear friends, including the Erdely and McLaughlin families; and many nieces and nephews.

Tate Jr., 68, of Horseheads, N.Y., formerly of Wellsville, N.Y., passed away on Friday (Aug. 16, 2013) at The Arnot Ogden Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. George was born July 14, 1945, in Wellsville, N.Y., the son of the late George A. and Evangeline Dwyer Tate Sr. Due to the death of George’s parents in August 1951 and February 1952, when he was a child, George was raised by his uncle and aunt, Augustine “Gus” and Gertrude Dwyer Padden. George was raised with their children as a brother to the Padden children. He graduated from Wellsville High School Class of 1963 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY Brockport and his Master’s Degree from Elmira College. George was three credits from completing his Doctorate Degree. He was a Veteran of The Vietnam War serving his country with The U.S. army.  George married his wife, Rosalie Anne “Skip” Vosburgh Tate, on Jan. 11, 1974, and they would have celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary on Jan. 11, 2014. He was a retired Math and Technology Teacher, having retired from The Horseheads Central School System. He was a communicant of St. Peter & Paul’s Church in Elmira, N.Y., and a Fourth Degree Knight with The Knights of Columbus. George was an avid sportsman and member of The North Forty Hunting Club and The Huntsville Hilton in Wellsville, N.Y., and a member of The Horseheads  Elks Lodge #2297. He and his wife were former members of The Corning Country Club. George is survived by his beloved wife, Rosalie Anne “Skip” Vosburgh Tate; daughter and son-in-law, Beth Vosburgh and John Corbett of Homestead, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Sylvia Benasutti Padden of Rochester, N.Y., and Brian and Marilyn McLaughlin Padden of Murphy, Texas; sister, Maureen Padden Cooper of Wellsville, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Virginia Spry of West Corners, N.Y., and Grace Marie Bystricky of Endicott, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of caring friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Lynch Funeral Home, 318 W. Broad St., Horseheads, N.Y., on Tuesday (Aug. 20, 2013) from 1-3 p.m. George’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. at St. Peter & Paul’s Church in Elmira, NY. stark, paulPaul C. Stark Sr. of 215 S. 11th St. died Tuesday (June 29, 2010) in his home. Born Dec. 28, 1945, in Mount Vernon, he was a son of Conrad F. and Eunice V. Seabott Stark. On Jan. 8, 1972, in Scio, he married Bonnie S. Brown, who survives. Paul graduated from Immaculate Conception Parochial School in Wellsville and from Wellsville High School. He then attended St. Bonaventure University. From 1967 to 1970, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps and for 13 months was in Vietnam with the infantry. He first worked as an orderly at Jones Memorial Hospital and had been a resident of Olean for the past 35 years. Paul was a very active communicant of St. Mary of the Angels Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister and a former Stephen minister and RCIA team member. In 1992 he received the Archbishop Walsh Volunteer of the Year award and was a volunteer Eucharistic minister for pastoral care at Olean General Hospital. He was active with the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. Additionally, he belonged to the Wellsville High School Alumni Association and enjoyed playing chess as well as walking. Paul found it gratifying to offer his friendship to others who were either sick or down on their luck. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Paul C. (Amanda) Stark Jr. of Lebanon, OH, and Andrew (Brandi) Stark of Southport, NC; two brothers, Timothy F. (Sophie) Stark of Chester, NH, and Peter M. (Rose) Stark of Ashville; mother-in-law, Rose Brown of Friendship; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to this parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Kathryn Ligus in 1991.  Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean.  Funeral services will be held Saturday (July 3, 2010) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Wesley E. Simpson, LaGrange, age 67, died Saturday June 11, 2011 at 5:43 p.m. at Parkview LaGrange Hospital, LaGrange, IN. He was born on January 14, 1944 in Wellsville, NY to Charles W. & Mabel (Wilcox) Simpson Sr. He married Sharon L. Miller on April 7, 1972 in the United Methodist Church in Howe, IN. She survives in LaGrange. Wesley served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam from February 1964 to December 1965 and August 1967 to December 1968. He received the AF Exp Medal, the code of conduct medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960, Good Conduct Medal (1stawd) 2 O/S Bars and Expert Rifles M-14 & M16. Wesley was employed at the Sturgis Foundry in Sturgis, MI as a Machinist until retiring after 35 years of service. He is survived by 1 sister – Sue & Richard Evans of Fort Wayne, IN. 1 sister-in-law – Debbie Simpson of LaPorte, IN. 2 nieces – Connie Slauf and Cindy Green. 5 nephews – Robert Green, David & Rachel Green, William & Becky Green, Richard & Annie Green and Michael Green. 1 grandchild and 1 great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, 1 son – Terry Simpson and 2 brothers – Charles & Donald Simpson. Visitation will be held on Tuesday June 14, 2011 from 4 – 8 p.m. at Carney-Frost Funeral Home, LaGrange, IN. Gary Ennis of Holley, formerly of LeRoy, passed away on the morning of Thursday October 31, 2013 at the Medina Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ennis was born on April 20, 1944 in Wellsville, New York to the late Joseph Ennis and Dorothy (Teller) Ennis of Wellsville. Gary served with the United States Navy from 1964-1968, and later worked at the Gates Chili Central School as a school bus mechanic. He had a passion for cars, boating, fishing, and spending winters in Florida. He is survived by his loving wife Edith, children; Beth (Thomas) Lander, Gary (Christine Herbert), mother; Dorothy Ennis, sister; Linda (Lloyd) Dickerson, 3 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be made at St. Francis Cemetery, LeRoy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Orleans County Hospice.

John Edward Ketchner, 70, of the Ketchner Road, passed away in Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville, on March 1, 2016, following a brief illness. He was born in Wellsville on Oct. 15, 1945, the son of the late William and Leola Carlin Ketchner. He was a lifelong resident of Wellsville and was a graduate of the Wellsville High School. On Aug. 21, 1965, he was married to Patricia Martin, who survives him. For many years, he was a self-employed dairy farmer and later operated his own landscaping business. He was a member of Genesis Bible Church of Scio. He enjoyed time spent with his family and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing. Surviving besides his wife, Patricia, are sons, Chad (Pamela) Ketchner of Wellsville, and Scott (Lidija) Ketchner of Hammond, La.; daughter, Mandy (Ben) Reynolds of Portville, N.Y.; grandchildren, Benny and Kirstin Reynolds, Dalton and Brady Ketchner, Brytni and Derek Ketchner; sister, Beverly House of DeLand, Fla.; also several nieces and nephews. Born Feb. 12, 1945, in Wellsville, she was a daughter of John and Mariam Harmon Butler. A lifelong resident of Wellsville, Ms. Dates was a 1963 graduate of  Wellsville High School. She had been employed as an engineering service clerk at Alstom Power-Air Preheater Co. in Wellsville for several years.  She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.  Surviving besides her mother of Wellsville are two daughters, Kimberly A. Dates of Clayton, N.C., and Karen A. Dates of Rateigh, N.C.; a sister, Diane E. Daly of Getzville; several nieces and nephews; and long time special friend, Dennis O’Connor of Wellsville. There was no visitation. A memorial service was held Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at the convenience of the family, where Rev. Dennis Wolf officiated. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wellsville. Curry, 68, of Genesee, PA, died Wednesday, September 14, 2011 in the Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, PA.   Born August 18, 1943, in Wellsville, NY, he was the son of Fred D. and Dorothy M. Granger Curry. On October 24, 1975, in Shinglehouse, PA, he married the former Lila S. Dickerson, who survives.  A Vietnam War Veteran, he served honorably with the US Army from 1964 — 1965. He was employed by ABB Air Preheater in Wellsville, NY for 11 years.  Ed was a member of the Genesee United Methodist Church, the Genesee Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company, serving as Chief, President, Captain, radio operator, and ambulance driver, and a life member of the Southwestern Firemen’s Association.  He served as girls softball coach in Whitesville, NY for several years and as a baseball umpire for all age levels.   Surviving besides his wife, Lila, are: two sons, Robert (Tracey) Nelson of Genesee and Scott (Christie) Curry of Evans, GA; a daughter, Jo Ann (Todd) Phillips of Genesee; six grandchildren, Deven Phillips, Mandy Slawson, Ryan Slawson, Conner Phillips, Emma Nelson, and Cameron Curry; a brother, Kenneth Curry of Wellsville; two sisters, Marilyn (Louis) Swarthout of Tampa, FL and Betty Sheard of Wellsville; nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard Curry; and two sisters, Joyce Darling and Marge McGlier.   Friends may call Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 3:00 – 5:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 PM at the Olney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ulysses, PA. Burial was followed in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan.  Mr. Gorman died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, in his home. John was born Sept. 8, 1944, in Wellsville, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1965 to 1969 and returned to his hometown where he met and married his wife of 33 years, Carolyn Cox Gorman, in 1970. They moved to the Kansas City area in 1975, shortly after John began truck driving for North American Van Lines, Oxygen Service and finally to Becker Corporation transporting fuel, where he was proud to have been honored for 13 years of accident-free driving and retiring in 1991 for health reasons. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Kansas City, Kan. He enjoyed car racing, Yankees Baseball, spending time with his grandchildren and his four-legged companion, Panda. He was preceded in death by his father, John T. Gorman, in 1975. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn, of the home; one son, Christopher John Gorman of Kansas City, Kan.; one daughter, Jennifer Anne Burke and her husband, Lary of Kansas City, Mo.; his mother Mildred Gorman of Wayland, N.Y.; one brother, Wayne Gorman, of LaVonia, N.Y.; two sisters, Theresa Dickens of Wayland, N.Y. and Kay Stevens of Lima, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Justyn Gorman, Noah and Phoebe Burke, and he was awaiting the birth of his fourth grandchild due in October. The family would like to extend a special thank you to those who offered support and guidance to John and his family during his final days, especially his home health care nurses Ellen and Lilly and the people with the Catholic Charities Hospice. Born Oct. 16, 1944 in Wellsville, he was the son of Francis and Wilma Thomas Hepker. Paul was a 1963 graduate of Wellsville High School. He worked as a tool and dye maker in Rochester and later went into the Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam from 1965 until he was wounded and spent several months in St. Albans Veterans Hospital. He was later employed at Worthington Corp. in Wellsville. He had graduated from Fairmont State College in Fairmont, W.Va. in the early 1970s. He was a member of the Allegany County Vietnam Veterans Organization. He also was a life member of the Marine Corps League Raider Detachment. Paul was a life member of the  Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion of  Wellsville, Frank B. Church Post 2530 in Wellsville and the Wellsville Moose Lodge 601. Survivors include his stepmother, Marquerite Hepker of Olean and several  cousins. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., Wellsville. Hunt, ManleyManley L. Hunt, 64, Inverness, died July 3, 2010, at his residence under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County. A native of Wellsville, NY, he was born on Oct. 10, 1945, to Lawrence and Ellen (Leonard) Hunt and came to this area in 1974 from there. He was employed for 35 years as a cable splicer with Century Link Telephone when it was the original Florida Telephone Company. Manley graduated from Wellsville High School in 1963. Active in our community, he was a member of the Highlands Volunteer Fire Department for five years and an active member and Trustee of the International Wood Collectors Society. He enjoyed collecting antique tractors and loved to travel, having been to Europe and all over the U.S.A. He did custom wood cutting using his woodmizer sawmill. He also enjoyed wildlife and all of nature. Additionally, he enjoyed helping others, regardless of their need. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Frances “Elaine” (Tarte) Hunt; two children, Tod Hunt and his wife, Izzy of Pensacola, FL; Amy Avery of Inverness; one brother, Bruce Hunt of Wellsville, NY; two grandchildren, Tyler Avery and Lea Hunt. He was predeceased by his stepson, Bronsell Rasbury, in 1988 and a brother, Edwin Hunt.  Friends are invited to join the family on Thursday, July 8th, from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home of Inverness for visitation and fellowship. Please attend in casual attire. Richard Ketchner, 65, of 4557 Charles St., died Sunday (Feb. 21, 2010) in Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. following a long illness. He was born June 4, 1944, in Wellsville, the son of Roland and Carmilla Brynes Ketchner. He was a lifelong resident of the Wellsville-Scio area and on Feb. 12, 1966, in Wellsville, was married to Diane Maynard, who survives him. He was a graduate of Wellsville High School and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Wellsville. He was employed at Dresser-Rand in Wellsville for 37 1/2 years and retired in 2001 as a crane operator. A longtime member of the Genesee Hose Company of Wellsville, he served as captain, trustee and president of the company. He also held memberships in the Southwestern Firemen’s Association. and in both the local and state associations. He held membership in the International Association of Machinists Lodge No. 1580. He enjoyed hot air ballooning and was a crew member for the BIU-BY-U balloon team. He also enjoyed playing cards and cheering the Buffalo Bills, the Sabres and Jeff Gordon and his NASCAR car No. 24. Surviving, besides his wife, Diane, are sons, Brian (JoAnne) Ketchner of Belleville, Mich., and Mark (Vickie) Ketchner of Wellsville; a grandson, Brayden Nicholas Ketchner; brothers, James Ketchner of Wellsville, and William Ketchner of Scio; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, John Ketchner. Friends may call from 3-5 p.m. Thursday at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville, at which time services will take place. Gerald Dennis O’Connor 64, of 19 Pine Street passed away on Monday, October 19, 2009 at Jones Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born June 12, 1945 in Wellsville the son of John G. and Lydia (Rahr) O’Connor. Dennis was a long time resident of Wellsville having graduated from the Immaculate Conception School in 1961 and Wellsville High School in 1963. He later graduated from OBI and started a career in banking at First Lincoln Bank in Rochester. He returned to Wellsville and worked for the former First Trust Union Bank. Dennis was with the bank through its several transitions and when it became Fleet Bank, he was transferred to East Aurora. He later was employed by Tops Friendly Markets in Wellsville and for past ten years he worked for the Wellsville Daily Reporter and retired in June of this year. He was a member of the Wellsville Elks Lodge # 1495 and was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed numerous trips to the NASCAR races at Watkins Glen and was a long time Bills and Yankees fan. He enjoyed playing euchre and music, especially Rod Stewart. Dennis was very proud of his Irish Heritage and loved Wellsville history. He appreciated the tradition of small town banking where a hand shake meant something and he took the time to get to know you and your family. Survivors include: a son Erin (Cassandra) O’Connor of Fort Collins, CO, a daughter, Mary (Richard) Iantorno of Wellsville; five grandchildren whom he loved very much; a brother, James (Pat) O’Connor of Grove, OK, two nephews and his special companion, Margaret Abbott of Wellsville. Friends are invited to call on Thursday, October 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. She was born March 7, 1945, in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Frederick and Delphine (Moyer) Wightman. On Jan. 31, 1975 in Wellsville, she married Roy W. Austin, who predeceased her Feb. 24, 2005.  Judy was raised in Wellsville and was a 1963 graduate of Wellsville High School. She was formerly employed in Wellsville at Loblaws, Super Duper, and Big N and at the Housing Department of Alfred State College. She later owned and operated several rental properties and a trucking company with her husband. She was a member of Brookside Wesleyan Church, where she enjoyed teaching and working with children. She also enjoyed camping and spending time with her family.  She is survived by two stepdaughters, Cheryl (William) Williams of Wellsville, and Tara Austin of Liverpool; one stepson, William (Rebecca) Austin of Andover; two sisters, Ann M. Clark of Canisteo, and Susie Wightman of Wellsville; one brother, Dennis Wightman of Wellsville; as well as several grandchildren, aunts, nieces, nephews and a loving family friend, Melody Elias of Wellsville, and a very special friend, Anne Williams of Wellsville. She was predeceased, in addition to her husband of 30 years, by a stepdaughter, Debbie Spizzirri.  Friends are invited to call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday (Nov. 18, 2011) at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with Rev. Robin George presiding. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. 11-07-Michael R YurcicMichael R. Yurcic, 65, of 157 N. Highland Avenue died on Saturday, November, 6, 2010 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness. He was born June 22, 1945 in St. Louis, MO, the son of the late Nicholas and Maxine (McJunkin) Yurcic. On May 5, 2000 he married Sherry Stillman Wade who survives. Mike was a 1963 graduate of Wellsville High School. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving with the Military Police during the Vietnam War from 1966-1967. When he returned to the United States he was stationed at Oakland, California and graduated from military school in 1968. He was a volunteer fireman in Wellsville and Willing for 30 years. He was first employed as a police officer for the Wellsville Police Department; he then worked for the United States Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 2001, and has been a general contractor in the Wellsville area for several years. He was a life member of the Morrison Hayes American Legion Post 702 and the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW. He loved the beach on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he and his wife have a second home. Surviving in addition to his wife are, four children from previous marriages; Eric Yurcic of Wellsville, Michelle Mess of Canaseraga, Jennifer Peeter of Elba and Nicole Heath of Georgia, three step daughters, Heather Beckering of Wellsville, Amy Bliss of Belmont and Cathy Buckley of Andover, several grandchildren, one great grandchild, one step grandchild on the way and his father and mother in law, Frank and Rosemary Davis of Wellsville. Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will follow visitation at 2:00 pm in the funeral hone with Rev. George Herrick presiding. Burial, with military honors will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
